📊 Too often, the role of inequality as a risk driver is not properly factored into government resilience planning.

As @tom-clark.bsky.social says in @prospectmagazine.co.uk, Rachel Reeves's conference speech, emphasising contribution, didn't specify who is not contributing to society - wealth extractors and tax dodgers, or immigrants and people relying on benefits? Govt needs clearer messaging on this, urgently.

Creating wealth that benefits everyone, that spreads wealth more fairly across society rather than concentrating it at the top, will help grow the economy - in fact, there's a limit to how much you can achieve growth without reducing wealth inequality.
Is growth a precondition for fairness?
Jack Jeffrey argues that we need to rethink growth rather than seeing it as a necessary first step in building a fairer society and economy

He went on to say that "the defining mission of this government is to grow the economy, improve living standards, and change the way we create wealth." That third 'mission' is key.

The latest edition of the Sunday Times Rich List raises some uncomfortable questions about how much wealth in the UK is created and how much is simply extracted

Quick reaction to the PM's conference speech (🧵)

"Wealth creation is hoarded by just a few communities", the PM said in his conference speech today. Another way of putting this is that too much wealth is extracted from our economy, rather than genuinely being created in the first place.

The biggest risks by far are the risks of inaction.

Here's hoping that November's budget starts to deliver on this vision by taking bold action to tackle wealth inequality, a fundamental barrier to fairness that undermines opportunity and economic growth while weakening our democracy and social cohesion (fairnessfoundation.com/risks).

Quick Rachel Reeves conference speech 🧵:
"I believe in a Britain founded on contribution, where we do our duty for each other, and where hard work is matched by fair reward. I believe in a Britain based on opportunity, where ordinary kids can flourish, unhindered by their background.”

Too many people feel that our economy is rigged against them- that no matter how hard they work or what contribution they make, they can't get by.

Our new report examines how this is fuelling the rise of populist politics- and what we can do about it.

The two-child limit is fundamentally unfair.

It arbitrarily discriminates against children in larger families, leading to unfair opportunities and outcomes.

Scrapping it would be a cost-effective way to cut poverty.

A fun afternoon with our members at their local club, @leytonorientfc.bsky.social. We were proud match sponsors and had a great time cheering on the O's.

Patriotic millionaires will always be on the side of the people. It's time to tax the super rich.
