Oh now that is a sensational claim to fame, going to dig some out tomorrow

Because you do I looked and the wobbly legged keeper also played for single games for Bury, Hellenic, Northwich Victoria and Glasshoughton Welfare and TWO games for Lincoln around that time. Lovely stuff.

Finally there is a fairly anodyne match report reminding us that incredibly Bruce Grobbelaar played for Chesham United in 1998 (4 app, 0 gls) I'm sure many other fans asked Brucie the same question during quieter moments in a game.

The ground previews gives a lovely little insight into non league life, I'd have given up on that burger at Hampton well before 40 minutes.

The game previews has a listing of fanzines available at the opponents, a feature I think is SUPERB! The Cloggers of the Year league has news of a certain bias for the manager but 16 bookings and 2 sendings off in the first 10 games of the season is impressive.

Reports appear mixed with some decent attempts at humour. Spot the Goalie is a good feature with our creators bitter about a recent loss. The end of the match report for that game combined with the start of the report for the next game show that managerial bollockings don't always work.

The cover celebrates a poor start to the season for bitter rivals Woking but as Woking are a division above the Shots I'm not sure. The back cover is a nice halloween themed cut out and keep feature, a fake press pass to get you free entry to Ryman grounds..again hmmm

Today's #FanzineoftheDay is from 1998 with no 3 of Aldershot's Redan Hill 90210. Redan hill is the former military practice ground next to the EBB. 90210 makes this the 2nd non league zine named after a TV show that next to Dulwich Hamlet's Champion Hill Street Blues.

Finally we have a rough guide to match ball sponsorship in the 80s which is absolutely tremendous and includes Frank Sidebottom. I need to find more copies of RR (named after Rodney Marsh who by now had even disappeared from the Tampa Bay Rowdies)

Niche; a piece on the upcoming American Professional soccer League (APSL) that was probably interesting to Mark himself but probably not many other people.

Interesting; A rather good letter from Eire about the way the English press had and still do twist things in a very sanctimonious way..and unfortunately in this case the fanzine itself.

Niche; A rather lovely piece about the history of cigarette cards

Interesting; An article about the way the West Midlands police had shown the Italian police how to handle fans at the upcoming world cup. Heaven help us

The editorial has a thought about fans standing on the terraces in August 1989 contemplating the fall of the Berlin wall and the budget...I'm not sure I ever stood on the terraces contemplating either.

Today's #FanzineoftheDay is Rodney Rodney issue 6 published in 1990 from Manchester. It's a curious beast this, full of all sorts of things about football, some of it interesting, other bits very niche (Though some still interesting). Great cover as well.

PLEASE, you’ll have me starting a Europe wide list of fanzines next….then global!

There is a lot more in this excellent fanzine to revel in but I need to research some of it a bit more first so for now I'll leave you with a tremendous paragraph from a long piece about the legend that was Andy Goram.

There is news of Scotland travel/ exile groups including the fantastically named Farta. There were many others like TAP-Tartan Army de Paris & Sporran Legion. The idea of meandering to an away fixture is something you would find difficult to persuade people to do today I suspect

McColl had a win percentage of 59.3%, the second best of any Scotland manager including beating England and winning the home championship twice. Whoever bought this fanzine had noted this and marked the email address for what I'm sure was an excoriating reply.
fanzinefc.bsky.social
The joy of buying old fanzines are the little things you spot inside, so despite our editor being a fervent global follower of Scotland he doesn't seem to know that Ian McColl was manager for 5 years.

The editorial kindly explains the reasons behind the fanzine being set up. It seems hard to imagine that when this started in 1998 that newsletters were still a thing but your mind plays tricks and these guys were dragging supporting Scotland into, well, the 1980s

Today's #FanzineoftheDay is Haggis Supper, dedicated to the Scottish national team. Who wouldn't buy something with a cover like that and a free poster for £1.

It's Thursday and that can mean only one thing, a new blog is up. This week we reference the genesis of Punk in the GDR vs the FDR and look at a survey from the desk of an Oxford academic...I'm not selling this very well am I? Just read it, OK?

Finally there is a cartoon...I wonder if they'd seen Biffa Bacon..the record of social history in this fanzine is amazing and shows how much the narrative in football has shifted. It's not the funniest fanzine around but it's a great record of the late 80s/early 90s

There is also an all too familiar letter of complaint to the chairman about the ground/club (I'd rather clubs hadn't 'improved' their tannoy to the 130 decibel levels of today) & an amazing interview with the council leader who are still the landlord of St. James' Park today...
