And that’s all folks! I hope this is helpful to anyone who might need it. But remember, these are just guidelines. All rules are meant to be broken, and at the end of the day as long as it looks good to you that’s all that matters! I can’t wait to see all your lovely creations. ✌🏻

6. COLOR & TEXTURE

Just like interior design, you want to have a color palette. Another important thing is texture, there are plants that have softer edges and ones that are sharper so think about how you want to arrange them. For example, it’s nice to include some evergreens among your flowers.

5. REPETITION

Repeat certain plants or colors throughout the space to create rhythm and cohesion, but change up the numbers or the plants they are grouped with for more variety. You can see here how the background plants are repeated to give some structure but have different plants in front.

4. RULE OF ODDS

With planting design, you typically want to plant in groups of three or five. This helps things look more natural than even numbers, unless you are going for a more formal design where you might want things to look more symmetrical. You can see the difference here.

3. LAYER LAYER LAYER

Typically, you're going to want taller plants in the back for structure and shorter ones in the front, with some sort of middle layer to bridge the gap. I suggest at least three different layers to start off with and then you can go from there.

2. PICTURE PERFECT

Think about the angles you usually take screenshots from, framing views is especially important if you want to have nice context for photos. You could also make a focal point that draws the eye. So if you're struggling, start with making things look good on camera!

1. MAKE A PLAN

Okay so basically the first thing you want to do is layout your space. You probably want to have an area for the swing, seating, etc so just think about where you want them. You’ll also want to think about where a path can go. But, don't feel like you need to fill every corner!
