Books!

To the very few that will ever read this, this year I wanted to immerse myself in literature and earnestly start reading again. I figured, why not share what I read on social media and hopefully post some intriguing things I come across.
Parastratiosphecomyia stratiosphecomyioides... This is the longest scientific name of any animal, given to the Southeast Asian Soldier Fly. It means "Near Soldier Wasp-fly." When you look at it, it makes sense. look it up!

Daily Fact: Did you know that Sharks don't have any bones... like at all? They have cartilage, which makes up their exoskeleton. Other marine species, such as Rays, Skates, and Chimaeras, also don't have bones.

The Protecting Local Zoos Act of 2026 was recently introduced by Representative Paul Gozar from Arizona. While the title suggests that this bill will protect local zoos, this is not entirely true. 1/3

Beloved Beasts: Fighting for Life in an Age of Extinction

I figured this book would follow the theme of the previous one I read, discussing different species and providing some interesting information to learn. I don't doubt this book will be just as good.

Stumbled upon a report from the WWF from 2024 that said populations of animals dropped 52% between 1970 and 2010... I don't doubt the trend has gotten worse.

Book #1 of the year, finished!

I really enjoyed what it had to offer. From exploring the reproductive system of eels to examining homosexuality in penguins and other species, I would definitely recommend this book to any wildlife enthusiasts.

Due to the actions of the current administration, researchers from Nature saw that thousands of PhD-holding workers left government agencies in 2025. In addition, hundreds of National Science Foundation grants were canceled or suspended... great...

First celebrated in February 1887, Groundhog Day started in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, with Punxsutawney Phil the Groundhog. It is said that if the Groundhog could see its shadow, it would mean six more weeks of cold weather would come.

Turkey Vultures are cool, but it turns out that they're the most damaging bird to planes as they accidentally fly into them. The Smithsonian Institution's Feather Identification Laboratory, which is a part of the Federal Aviation Administration, confirms this is the case :(

Just learned about how the African Clawed Frog (Xenopus laevis) is likely responsible for the significant decline and extinction of many frog species, as they are carriers of Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Chytrid Fungus).

Beavers belong in Genus Castor, and Beavers produce Castoreum, a secretion produced by the castor sacs found in beavers. This secretion can help tell the American Beaver and Eurasian Beaver apart, as they both look very similar.

Soooo apparently, for centuries, researchers (Including Aristotle) dedicated so much time to locating the gondas of Eels.... yeah. Also, there's no photographic or video evidence of Eels reproducing in the wild. They likely breed somewhere in the Sargasso Sea.
