Calypso Faustine Bugeaud Strangers called the cliff mist-kissed, And sailors sang of shrouds. But the village only whispered, And seldom spoke of her aloud. Some still sing of brine-stung souls Trapped in the rock. Cold From shipwrecks and wretched Wanderings. Merchant ships catch a glimpse Of broken limbs on the shoreline, Scattered like glass shattered For sand to swallow in time. Pacified by neither pact nor offering, The cliffside, takes and takes and She never stops coveting. But. With tired rays and twirling gale Comes the nightly furlough. From dinghy, schooner or frigate, Hear the song of sea-foam. See how delicate Fog settles on your shoulders: A mantle colder Than the oldest shade. For the dead wander in the gloaming, And dance at night with the wind.
