Unless you know how the documents are tracked (which you rarely do), it’s hard to tell that you won’t be found if they’re distributed widely. The safest thing to do is to not distribute them widely and ensure the people you gave them to won’t propagate them further in original form

For instance, Reality Winner was identified with “printer tracking dots”. Even more discretely, you could have differences in punctuation in text, or an image could be cropped slightly differently, or the colors could be changed imperceptibly but in a way that a program can detect.

You need to know what kind of document it is and how much care went into making it identifiable. For run-of-the-mill/incompetently prepared documents, stripping the metadata is fine. However, it’s possible to distribute slightly different documents to everyone and it gets much harder from there

I stopped Facebook after all the data scandals, I stopped Reddit when they dropped third-party clients, I stopped Instagram due to the recent moderation changes, I stopped Twitter when Musk axed trust & safety. Do you have any concerns that American social media does not serve American wants?
