Only three days now until our first online session on #AquaticHyphomycetes There’s still time to sign up by emailing [email protected] Andi Bruder will be giving us a quick overview of this special ecological group...

A new Zoom-based chat group focussing on #AquaticHyphomycetes will be starting on 8th October. Join us in the evening (BST) to chat and learn about this fascinating group of fungi. Contact me at [email protected] if interested. @britmycolsoc.org.uk @funaction.bsky.social
Aquatic hyphomycete spores from Parc Natur Penglais. Including: Anguillospora crassa, Tricladium splendens, Neonectria lugdeunensis, Tetracladium marchalianum and Articulospora tetracladia. Dyed with cotton blue.

The app makes this a great survey for teenagers (as well as the rest of us!)

Many lichen species are sensitive to nitrogen pollution, making them natural indicators of air quality.

📱LicheN is a new app enabling people to help monitor air quality using lichens. Data gathered will improve understanding of N pollution and its impacts on ecosystems.

I always find Anguillospora species difficult to name so only named Anguillospora crassa. I need my microscope with a x60 objective for those. X40 does give a better depth of field for photography though. I found two spores from my favourite species: Flabellospora accuminata. Absolutely gorgeous.

August: Working with only a x10 objective rather than a x20 made the task more difficult but I found nine species. Only seven of these were found in May.

This was a really sloppy sample of foam. As the waterfall runs faster there are no eddies to accumulate foam so what was collected was not much more than temporary bubbles.

I’m working backwards through time at this waterfall. September’s sample contained only two spores from #AquaticHyphomycetes: one each of Tricladium splendens and Triscelophorus accuminata.

I should start coming to the BMS autumn forays. Its just work season for me.☹️

I collected another sample from this waterfall today. I've now got monthly collections from April to September and I intend to keep collecting through the winter. Just need to find time to look at how the species composition changes through the year.

Wow. I thought you'd only just found it. Presumably it was some time ago if it's already been sequenced. Congratulations.

The wood may be dead but that's a very healthy lichen colony! Beautiful. I love tiny organisms (as long as the don't run, jump or wriggle!)

Did it appear yo be growing on the moss? On the grass? Or on thatch?

Exciting! Who is there in the UK, or beyond, to check this out for you?
fayrnhawk.bsky.social
Great idea. You've still packed lots of information in. Do you find the apothecia rich form in your area? I never found it in Norfolk or Surrey. It was always the isidiate form you've shown here.
fayrnhawk.bsky.social
Where were you surveying? Dermatocarpon species are not common in southern England.

It certainly is. We'll have some professionals there to help us, but generally it's an opportunity to share, help and learn together. Email me at [email protected] to learn more or to sign up. 7-9pm on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month.

I think this looks lovely! Definitely 'arty'.

#AquaticHyphomycetes are sometimes known as Ingoldian fungi. CT Ingold of University College, Leicester was the first researcher to study this group of fungi when he looked at species growing on alder leaves in a stream doi.org/10.1016/S000...
