I study two minimum wage hikes in Portugal: 2014 and 2016.

Exploiting the quasi-experimental nature of the policy and leveraging rich administrative linked employer-employee data, I confirm the main predictions of the model.

Theoretically, I introduce a minimum wage into a stylized model of compensation policies rooted in the personnel economics literature, and derive predictions to guide the empirical analysis.
