Schools are generally safe places but conversations about school safety data in your schools can help. I sat down with The National Desk to discuss research on school safety and the latest FBI school crime report.
It's back-to-school time, but are schools safe?
The FBI published a report this week, "Crime in Schools," showing that roughly 1.3 million criminal incidents occurred over the last five years at schools.

Ten years ago this summer, I was preparing to defend my dissertation at Vandy. Today, I received word that I've been promoted to full professor at my undergrad alma mater. Thanks to all of the mentors, collaborators, students, and friends who have supported me in this journey!

We find states varied in whether they said they full adopted the NGSS standards or adopted standards based on NGSS - with political party predicting this difference.
fchriscurran.bsky.social
Though the standards may not differ much in content, adopting standards "based on" NGSS, rather than full adoption, may give states cover to avoid political push back to common standards.
fchriscurran.bsky.social
National standards like the Common Core are controversial. Interestingly, the Next Generation Science Standards have avoided much of this controversy. Katharine Harris-Walls and I examine the correlates of states adopting NGSS to explore why.

Thanks to The Seattle Times for sharing my research on school policing in their latest reporting. I discuss how SROs can be a resource to schools but how educators may bring them into disciplinary situations that are better left to school personnel.
