Do you take this as a sign that the EU should indeed create a more centralized structure for spending regional funds?

Open Access is just a scam, unless we decide that there won't be journals anymore and we just self-publish.

I'm not sure it is so clear. And it could also be that the head and hands were attached to a different body and were only later attached to this! But I don't know much about this specific piece

I don't know how this works in Princeton or Cambridge, but as a supervisor I have to preemptively authorize trips and reimbursement requests of my phds. It's hard for me to see how the supervisors were not held accountable for such a gross underestimation of the risks involved in these trips.2/2

In Regeni's case, at least one of the supervisors was informed he felt at risk and did not even suggest he had to leave Egypt. How could her supervisors encourage Tsurkov to engage in a trip to Iraq to work on Shia militias is hard to imagine. 1/2

In both cases the universities failed to prevent the students from taking unreasonable risks.

We should not forget what happened to Giulio Regeni, sent to death in Egypt for his PhD thesis. In that case, Cambridge University was not held accountable.

I don't know whether it holds for Dutch politics as well, but in Italy you should never comment on the first exit polls

It is not an Italian slur, but an Italian-American slur. Never heard that word in Italy.

I often think what I'd be able to do if I woke up in 18th century Naples. The answer is not much. I could maybe teach some algebra or foreign languages. But I'd have no idea how to calculate square roots or logarithms by hand...

the real problem is I still remember numbers that no longer exist and that I would not call anyway, such as the fixed line of my grade six classmate...
