Mostly a Mastodon account, over at https://mastodon.social/@fedilore

I talk about social media moderation and transphobia and how those two things tend to overlap.
The business model for Facebook and Twitter and BlueSky and TikTok is to get big fast by ignoring basic expectations for product safety.

We knew how to do moderation on bulletin boards.

We know how to do moderation on Mastodon.

It's not that hard.

If you genuinely believe that BlueSky needs to feed your data into an LLM to keep you safe, then you're admitting that BlueSky has worse content moderation than 4chan or Something Awful.

You only need AI to help with moderation if you allow Nazis and pedophiles onto your social network.

We shouldn't let our standards for content moderation fall that far.

Don't trust these freaks who want to feed everything you post into some AI.

It's not necessary. It doesn't help. It makes moderation worse.

But it makes some rich assholes richer, by letting them steal your data.

Thread. Not threat.

I trust one of these two women to run a social media site.

To be clear, my core point is that Jay is bad because she runs a company that made protocol that does bad things.

You could imagine a different way to run things where my PDS encrypts the data of my users, and each destination PDS needs to ask permission from my PDS to unencrypt that data.
October 5, 2025 at 7:07 PM
Imagine I run a PDS for queer people refugees.

I want my users to be able to communicate with most users of the protocol, but I do not want their information to be shared with a known list of PDSs that allow Nazis.

There isn't currently any way to do that, because everything is maximally public.

ATProto is designed to make data scraping as easy as possible, by removing basic safety and privacy features that every other platform has.

A PDS cannot reasonably prevent all untrusted relays from collecting data from it, or prevent relays from sharing their data with a malicious PDS.
October 5, 2025 at 7:07 PM
1) Doing bad things in a more efficient way is worse.

2) I have been writing in detail about how ATProto is fundamentally unsafe by design for more than a year now, but yes. The issue isn't really AppViews, it's that relays collect and share posts without the consent of the PDS.

The grass-cutting sword!

I'm a Fediverse/ActivityPub/Mastodon drama account, who talks about big (usually transphobic) drama between instance admins.

That stuff can be scary at first, but it's almost all just drama.

Ultimately your chosen instance admin is in control, not some hashtag.
