Software Dev working on Renewable Energy website/APIs. Used by multiple state agencies, homeowners, large companies, and LSEs. Using C# and SQL Server. Contractor for 20+ years. Using home automation to make my house a better place.
I do not think they sold it. They did buy it and then change it to be less useful. That is why a lot of people that used WebCore or similar functionality left. Look at Home Assistant which is very flexible and has many integrations.

P.S. your devices matter. WiFi is chatty and uses more energy. You want devices that work.

I use Home Assistant and it is local. Able to unlock my door from my car and then just walk in. Sets the house alarm when phones leave/arrive at the house. Lots of stuff and it works. I do think of new things for it to do for me. "going to bed" and it turns on/off my lights in a timed sequence.

I take backups every 3 days and I keep 11 of them. Do I need all of them? Probably no but it does not take up too much space and I may need it. Saved local and google drive.

I would recommend staying away from wifi which is chatty and uses more power. I think all of the proprietary systems; apple, google, amazon require internet access which means delays and maybe system down. Home Assistant is local first, has many integrations, and is very active. Works great.

I use Home Assistant which is open source, local, and very flexible. I support them partially by using Nabu Casa to get internet access although I could do it myself. Their automation system is good but I am using the Node-Red plugin. I was using SmartThings but they changed and became worse.
