It seems like the races in LOTR (orcs, elves, etc.) have particular immutable traits that appeal to the phrenology-minded. SW, otoh, seems to lean more towards individual characters who happen to be different species, working together in a DEI-coded way.

Those legal consequences are exceedingly rare, and only in egregious situations of reckless conduct, DUI, etc. Cars malfunction all the time and cause death, no one goes to jail. My point is that death is an accepted consequence of car culture. We could have mass transit, but no money in that!

I'm confused...we are apathetic towards the thousands of children killed every year by human drivers, why should we behave any different towards robot drivers?

Because "elites" look down on them. The South didn't start the Civil War because they thought there was a legitimate threat to slavery--the North was making too much money off the slave economy for that to be a legitimate possibility. They bombed Ft Sumter because abolitionists said mean things.
