Favorite thing that I saw today was groups of fluffy-haired, tracksuit-clad Black & brown boys hurrying around a mall to buy Mother's Day gifts (tomorrow in France). They proudly carried sparkly pink things or plush toys or dainty jewelry store bags. May they never be parted from childhood's joy. 🙏🏽

I attended Duke in large part ’cause I had a full ride merit scholarship reserved for students “of African descent.“ Was a finalist for the prestigious AB Duke but the “other Black finalist” got that one. Anyhoo, Duke unceremoniously ended the “Black scholarship” in spring 2024. Before the election.

Just a few of my mishaps in the past 48 hours:
- client's secy did not book a meeting into client's calendar
- hotel reservation cancelled by system bug
- vending machine took my cash and gave me an empty cup in return

This is comedy! They are really out here raising prices (a) in this economy and (b) still in the throes of consumer wrath? It's almost as though some AI ran the numbers from the past few days and said "raise the rates" with zero awareness of context.

I suppose it could be interesting to look at the gap between salary and cost of living. I don't know enough about other systems (or the public French system for that matter) to compare factors like teaching load, publication support, etc.

Have you seen the salaries in France? Maybe not the full (or even partial) explanation, but it's not a great place to make money as a working person.
