We were but found you had to factor in the cost of membership and, in our case, the distance from the store, against potential savings. Some things were cost effective and others not. Now I’m alone it’s not worth my while - I can do as well with a crafty supermarket shop.

I have ‘fond’ memories of my mother rubbing fat into flour for pastry with a fag between her lips, its lengthening ash perilously close to becoming part of the mix as she leaned over the bowl. Having said that her pastry was the stuff of dreams.
