It’s so important to me to cover economic abuse - so I was delighted to have the chance to raise it on the World Service. Insights from UK, USA, South Africa and more. Thanks to @nicolajanesharp.bsky.social and all my contributors, especially ‘Mary’ for sharing her experience so frankly.

“Are you getting paid?”

“Is this a paid ‘opportunity’”
Hi Felicity, Unfortunately, due to our goal of making business more financially accessible, we don’t have a dedicated presenter budget. Despite this, it’s a fantastic extended marketing opportunity where you’d gain great exposure interviewing our headline speakers, including figures like Touker Suleyman, and be featured across our event’s digital channels and marketing materials. It’s an excellent way to build visibility, connect with influential business leaders, and showcase your presenting skills to a large professional audience.

“Hi Felicity, we’re looking to collaborate… incredible visibility… a real opportunity”

Guys, when you mean ‘3 days of unpaid work’ at least have the guts to SAY it rather than make it sound like a favour.

Money Box is looking for people who set up pensions for their children or grandchildren this week. Have you invested for anyone under 18? Would you be willing to share your story? Email [email protected] – and thanks! Shares gratefully received - it’s a niche request!
felicityhannah.bsky.social
Yes exactly - and so it’s for You and Yours the radio show

How would you know if eg people of colour or people wearing religious dress or teens were turned away more than white women in Boden blazers like me? If it’s down to ‘discretion’ then there’s no way to know if prejudice creeps in.

I once paid for a teen who had the wrong ticket (admittedly this was a long time ago) and the ticket inspector tried to refuse to let me
felicityhannah.bsky.social
It’s a subtle difference but we are more bank accounts and pensions, they are more costs and product experience
felicityhannah.bsky.social
Also, I was polite, insistent and was eventually allowed on - albeit only with the threat of standing. I bet my teenage son would not have had the same discretion shown to him.

We’re a personal finance show, that’s more consumer affairs, which is You and Yours

It makes no sense commercially, they would have lost money by insisting I catch the delayed train. It makes no operational sense to leave passengers building on on the platforms when you have rolling stock rolling past. And it makes no sense as a human to refuse me entry or tell me I have to stand.

9) I walk into the first carriage and it is ALMOST EMPTY THERE ARE DOZENS OF SEATS. One woman has her dog on the seat next to her and I easily find two spare together.

7) He frowns and eventually says “you’ll have to stand all the way to London, you won’t find a seat.”
I agree. He lets me on.
8) I sit down on the floor next to the toilet and the train manager eventually says ‘look if you can find a seat you can sit in it’
felicityhannah.bsky.social
5) I contemplate that if I wait for the delayed train this company will have to reimburse me the cost as I will be so late, meaning this refusal makes absolutely no sense as a business. But he still says no.
6) “Is there any way you will let me on this train?” I ask in final desperation
felicityhannah.bsky.social
3) Next train stops and I rush over to train manager and ask if I can use my ticket on his train. He shakes his head and doesn’t even speak to me.
4) I politely explain that I know he has discretion and please can I get on his train as otherwise mine will be 2 hours late

Rail travel - my odyssey:
1) Booked a train to London using split tickets to make it £170 return instead of £240.
2) Train delayed. Next train is the same company and gets in later than planned train but split ticket doesn’t count. Nice staff say it is up to the train manager if he will let me on.

I do sometimes utter ‘moonah’ under my breath 😂

Apparently ‘fishes’ is the plural when it’s lots of different species of fish
