but i always took that as her crying over knowing that despite gatsby having wealth now, it’s purely just that. no amount of fancy shirts will give him the social positionality of old money. it also represents the shallowness of their relationship.

2)i don’t think she would’ve left him even without her daughter, but she absolutely did not want her daughter’s social status affected by her leaving tom. i also don’t think he’d let her leave with the baby. i know the scene where daisy cries over gatsby’s expensive shirts is interpreted differently

1) jay was in love with the idea of daisy. what represented for him was a level of wealth of inaccessible to him, a positionality that could only be obtained through old money. i do think he really loved her deep down, but a version of her that was incapable of existing.
