I dont think every character arc needs to lead to an upward trajectory. Max said when he came back hes done with all the nice stuff he did with Cole because in his eyes it made him weaker. He came out of the storyline more locked into his toxic mindset than before.

I think it being more subtle works better for mjfs character so that when he has moments like that or the Briscoe promo after his wedding he feels much more like a real person instead of just another character. Similar to how ** **** used to work before he went crazy

I still remember that one match against hanger I think at last years revolution or something? Where he cried and asked the crowd why they choose hangman over him. Theres a lot of room to explore this stuff imo and thats why I think most people give max a pass on the cheap heat stuff

I get the whole he uses cheap heat thing but with the exception of the take a shita incident. Most of the people he targets are things that drive his biggest insecurities. MJF v ospreay was about how the fans havent embraced him like they do ospreay. Same with mistico.
