Our very shy but ubiquitous farm Inhabitant. Has lived here for many years but is still very wary of us. A majestic and beautiful creature.

It’s almost time. Looking like a good year for gooseberries here. 🌱🌿#permaculture

We propagate elderberry everywhere. We have an abundance so in spring we just wander around sticking cuttings into the ground. Here’s one that’s thriving that is interesting. Under the west side of a fairly large tree right at the base. Curious if it’s flowering will be as vigorous. 🌱🌿 #permaculture

Aronia, black currant and gooseberries are in bloom. The aronia and gooseberries are really taking off after a couple tough years. The currants struggle in the peak of summer but holding on. 🌿🌱#permaculture

The ramps transplanted three years ago are back again. Super excited they are resilient but sad that they are sooooo sloooow to spread. I don’t see any spread at all. I’ll take the small win however of a small bit of ramp leaf butter. Baby steps. 🌿🌱#permaculture

Two days of prep for a dinner two weeks from today. A lot to do between. Lemon confit two ways and both lacto fermented plums and asparagus. Two amaro liqueur infusions. An elderflower liqueur and a citrus artichoke with barks, spices and herbs digestife. 🍽🌿🌱

The scarlet quince is establishing nicely. I did not expect the flowers to be so beautiful. Quite a stunning plant. 🌱 🌿#permaculture

Elderberry propagation has begun. Propping along fencing to create edible hedgerow windbreaks. Magnolias are in bloom. As beautiful as they are we harvest in the morning. In the background you can see wild pear w Yellow Huffcapp grafts. The wild has blooms the Huff’s do not. #permaculture 🌿🌱

A beautiful morning to walk in the orchard looking at the blossoms and seeing which berries we planted survived the ice storm. Lots of smells for Yeti.

It’s really surreal to be reading a book making the point that diversity is disappearing and it is needed for the survival of humanity and at the same time the word itself has been banned from all government documents and if you include it in a grant proposal it will be discarded without hesitation.

New syrup yesterday. Lavender and sumac. As I mentioned recently I hope to have bigger and bigger harvests over the next few years from the new colonies I have planted. We harvest around 50 gal currently. With more berries we can start making spices which I am very excited about. 🌱🌿#permaculture

Winter grow room fun. Arguably the hottest pepper in the world. The chocolate primotalii. Insane. These seeds will be going into trays soon. Our elderberry Honeybee cuttings are budding out nicely. It’s the first to flower and produces berries until kill frost. Radical indeterminacy 🌱🌿#permaculture

Two sumac trees grown on an eroded portion of the orchard where other fruit trees failed. Two years ago I scattered seed in this and 2 other places. I counted 50 or more yesterday. Two nice new colonies that we might be able to start harvesting as soon as next year. 🌱🌿 #peraculture

When life gives you invasive Bradford Pear use it for root stock. This is flourishing Huffcapp Perry pear from England grafted on a wild tree 2 yr ago. This harnesses the (grown from seed) in situ root structure (tap root) and the immune system of a very agressive and hardy plant. 🌱 🌿#permaculture
