Reyin isn't our canon Rook anymore but she was our first Rook and still a char in Clay's canon. She was a brand new recruit when the events of Adamant fortress took place and was rescued from sacrifice by Inquisition forces. Big HoF fan but chooses not to remain in Ferelden with the others post-DAI.

I love writing Alyss interacting with kids and I will do it as often as I can. Especially this early on, it's pretty much the only glimpses we get to what she's like with her guard fully down.

"Are you Dalish?" she asked, looking from Alyss to Zevran.

The two elves exchanged a momentarily confused glance before realization slowly began to creep. "No," Alyss answered. "Why do you ask?"

The girl frowned a bit confused. "Ma said that when elves have marks on their faces is 'cause they're Dalish. And when dwarves have marks on their faces…" At this her brother shushed her, and the girl acquiesced, though she continued her questioning. "If you're not Dalish how come you both have marks on your faces?"

"Well, I can't speak for Zevran," Alyss told her. "But I got mine just because I thought it would make me look tough. You think it works?"

The girl nodded. "You look like a warrior."

Alyss chuckled. "Great. Now… As for the Dalish… They wear very specific markings to honor their Gods. Not all elves with tattoos are Dalish," she told her. "And it's okay to ask, but you shouldn't assume, okay?"

"Okay!"

Leliana and Sten lingered at the rear, the Qunari stone faced and silent, the archer humming as always. The Sister's voice carried in the wind. A gentle flutter of a sound just underneath the creak of the wagon's wheels and the huffs of the oxen, and the voices of their fellow travelers.

"What are you smiling about?"

"Hm?"

Alistair chuckled at her distraction. "I said, what are you smiling about?” he repeated curiously.

Alyss frowned at the words. "Nothing," she mumbled. "I was just… thinking about the book I've been reading."

Alyss has a lot of respect for Leliana's faith and is more open to her ideas of the Maker than the Chantry's and that definitely softens her resentment a lot over time. Ultimately though her faith and reverence are entirely devoted to her wife and not the Maker (as it should).

For all her petulance towards the Chantry, Alyss was silent at her side. From the corner of her eye Leliana could see her head bowed, face obscured by a curtain of red hair, and whether or not it was in prayer or merely deep thought, it wasn't for her to intrude upon. After a time, she straightened beside her on the pew, and Leliana could feel her gaze wandering the room. She caught the movement of a small wave that may have been directed either at Justinia or Cassandra, and allowed herself a small chuckle.

"So, you do know the Chant beyond the funny verses," she pointed out.

"Whatever I may feel about the Maker, Songbird, I do always listen to you," Alyss replied in earnest. "And there is, admittedly, comfort in words. There's some nice poetry in the Chant if nothing else."

"Oh?" Leliana questioned.

"Hm." Alyss nodded. And then, quietly, she recited: "In the long hours of the night. When hope has abandoned me. I will see the stars and know Your Light remains."

The words were spoken with a reverence Leliana knew well Alyss did not feel. Not for Andraste. Not for the Maker. And although she could feel the Warden's gaze upon her, she kept her head down, unsure of whether she could withstand it.

"I have faced armies with You as my shield. And though I bear scars beyond counting, nothing can break me except Your absence," she continued.

"Though all others may forget You,Your name is etched into my every step," Alyss continued, quieter, gentler. "I will not forsake You, even if I forget myself."

Drawing a much too shallow breath, Leliana turned to face her then, letting her folded hands rest upon her lap. Alyss offered only a smile, both gentle and apologetic.

"I still don't know how I feel about the Maker, Songbird," she admitted. "But my faith in you? Unwavering. Unbreakable. Always."

"And hopefully not misguided," Leliana said, carefully. "Sometimes I worry you hold me up much too high, mon coeur."

"There's no such thing in my opinion," Alyss said. "And you know me, I don't engage in blind faith, Songbird."

As a treat and because it's #DAFanFriday, here's some fine examples of Alyss being either a snarky bitch, a silly goof, or ruining a serious moment because she can't fucking help her damn self lol:

"I don't understand," he said. "You look like a woman."

Alyss flinched, unsure what prompted such a statement, and after a moment of allowing the shock to wear off she looked up at the Qunari wide-eyed, making a show of patting her own chest over her leathers.

"Andraste's tits, you're right!" she exclaimed. "I had no idea! Why did nobody ever tell me?"

Sten seemed unfazed by her sarcasm as always.

"You are a Grey Warden," he continued. "So it follows that you can't be a woman."

Alyss snorted a soft chuckle. "Well, someone fucked up somewhere because they went and recruited me tits and all."

Abruptly, Alyss dropped her weapon with an exaggerated gasp and, clutching the chest of her tunic, pointed at the bard and exclaimed. "Oh, no! An Orlesian! My only weakness!" She fell to her knees and with monumental effort not to break into giggles, continued. "She's not even doing anything, but her existence makes my balls twist with anger!"

"Alyss!" Leliana scolded. "Language!"

Alyss snorted softly, her composure breaking as the children took their chance to generously smack her around with their branches. "Please I grew up in this place, I know they've heard worse at this age," she spoke amidst laughter.

"Menace," Leliana chided, though unable to resist matching her smile.

"Moi?" Alyss asked, in a far too exaggerated mimicry of Leliana's own speech. "Never."

“She is quite the pretty one, I suppose.”

Alyss, not wanting this conversation to go where it was inevitably headed, knew to seize an opportunity when one presented itself. “Is she now? I could put in a good word for you, if you’d like. Not that I think you need it by the way she'd been sneaking glances at your ti—”

“No!” Morrigan protested, immediately annoyed by how her voice hiked in pitch with the word. “That is not what I meant and you know it.”

“Are you sure? Because I quite honestly can see it. The two of you would have a certain gloomy sunshine quality as a couple. Opposites attract and whatnot.”

Morrigan drew a deep breath, which Alyss was certain had been the one thing saving her from a grisly toadstool-related fate. “Even if I were thusly inclined I would rather couple with a darkspawn than some chantry zealot.”

Alyss couldn’t help but snort into her cup of tea. “Thusly inclined? Morrigan...” She laughed. “You can say you’re not into women, it’s okay.”

“You are absolutely insufferable, do you realize?”

Alyss smirked. “Thank you, I put in the effort where it counts.”

“If you cannot believe the Maker watches over you, can you at least trust that I will?”

Alyss hummed, pretending to consider the proposal. “I don’t know, sounds like a trap.”

“A trap?”

“Mhm. I’ll say yes and then you’ll say: ah but, see, it was the Maker who sent me to help you stop the blight, so—” Alyss’ poor mockery of an Orlesian accent died in her throat as Leliana smacked her hard on the arm.

“I do not sound like that.”

Alyss hadn’t meant to, but the actual whine in Leliana’s voice sent her into a fit of laughter so severe she had to lean against the bard to keep from falling over. “Sorry,” she wheezed. “I’m sorry!”

“You are such an ass,” Leliana scolded, although a small chuckle slipped through her indignation.

#WIPWednesday We're very far from Awakening, but you can tell how much Alyss and Sigrun are gonna vibe cause they're both lil gremlins who would tell jokes at their own fucken funerals. lol

Alyss crossed her arms over her chest, posture momentarily tensing before she breathed out. "Are you sure there's no way to cure you?"

"Cure me?" Wynne chuckled. "I was unaware I had fallen ill."

"You know what I mean," Alyss said, though scoffing at herself for it.

"Even you know one cannot cure the dead, my dear," Wynne told her. "Besides, I am not the only one dying. You are, too. I'm just more efficient about it."

Alyss breathed out a chuckle, then, shoulders dropping in silent resignation. "That's not fair now. I'm quite certain I would have beaten you to it if other people didn't insist on running interference."

Afternoon Blue
You can be both gentle, and relentless. Soothing, and unforgiving, whether that's towards yourself, or others. You're someone who is considered a natural born leader, and you tend to take that title in pride, although there are times when you wish that you wouldn't have to always be the one who makes the decisions. The pressure that you've lived with so far has settled heavily onto your shoulders, and even though you've learned to live with it, you can't help but wonder what it would be like to share that burden with someone else, for once. People have always placed their expectations on you, and you always rise to the task- regardless of whether you think you can really do it, or not. Its led to you having some unfair expectations of others- after all, who are they to be so far behind? Who are they to sit and rest, when you must do all this work? You have to learn to let others take some of that burden from you, you have to learn to rest. The only thing truly stopping yourself from resting now, is you.

Not gonna say I'm promoting it since I'm not posting it publicly (yet?), but I like this section on my latest fic chapter quite a bit, so I will share it for #DAFanFriday this day.

Alyss walked back to her camp, bag of supplies hanging from her shoulder and her chestpiece tucked under her other arm. The way the night air felt cooler without it made her feel much too exposed. As if some part of her couldn't stand to be touched even by the elements anymore. Tentatively she reached out for the fresh bandages, partially visible through the tear in her clothes. A dull numbing feeling slowly took hold of the area as the healing herbs took effect. Her body would mend, as she knew it could, as it had several times before, but she couldn't be so sure about all the small ways every other part of her felt broken. The whispers in her dreams, the bouts of anger, all the ways her body seemed to either act of its own accord or refuse to obey her now… she hated the feeling of having been bent into a shape she could no longer fully recognize.

And for today's #WIPWednesday: Morrigan and Alyss totally platonically bickering in a heterosexual way, 100% not flirting.

We're not gonna read too much into it or the fact Morrigan was the only one in the whole party who managed to get this dumb raccoon to accept some fucking help.

"'Tis not a deep wound," she concluded, gesturing for Alyss to lay back, to which she obliged though a bit reluctantly. "Still foolish to not tend to it immediately."

"I had too good of an upper hand to let that assassin see how he bled me," Alyss muttered.

"Which he could not do had you taken his life," Morrigan retorted. "I do realize that would require you to make two wise decisions in close proximity to one another, however, and I must not hold you to such monumentally high expectations."

Alyss couldn't help but laugh despite knowing it would inevitably disrupt the mage's work.

"Hold still," Morrigan scolded.

"I'm sorry," Alyss said, taking a long deep breath to still herself. "But you know, I do wonder how long until you run out of clever ways to call me an idiot."

"I would say that depends on how soon you will run out of ways to test my patience, my dear Warden."
