With lots of new people and followers, thought I’d give my bio:

I’m 2-times an immigrant (🇵🇹—>🇨🇦, 🇨🇦—>🇺🇸), grew up in Winnipeg, 1st-gen. I’m a prof at UCDavis where I study language processing and teach amazing students. Love progressive politics, science, commuter cycling, running, and Jane Austen.

Bari Weiss introduced herself to CBS News staff today on the network's 9AM call, saying she wants to "win," which requires restoring trust to CBS. She also said she was excited for staff to get to know the Free Press, and ended her remarks by saying: "Let's do the fucking news."

I always tell this story when I hear debates about sharing. My PhD student was about to submit a paper and so got ready to upload code and data. She decided to run the code again to make sure everything was fit for others to see/use, and she found an error! Sharing encourages carefulness.

You might think that the mayor of Yellowknife, the capital of Canada's vast Northwest Territories, would be a fan of giant pickups.

Nope. He's disgusted by car bloat.

We’re a shoeless household, but I get that there are cultural differences and floors can be washed. But chairs are meant to be sat in, and no one’s wiping them down between users!
fernandaedi.bsky.social
A minor thing compared to what we’re currently dealing with, but I will never understand people who put their feet up on chairs in public places. Don’t they know where their shoes have been?

The real generational divide is people who refuse to watch a video if it could be an article versus people who refuse to read an article if it could be a video

The street I live on is narrow and curved. When I drive (which isn't often, since I normally bike), childless me drives super slowly in case the neighborhood kids are playing in the street. The kids' parents zoom into their driveways at top speed. I truly don't get it.

The final scene from The Way We Were is burned in my brain, probably because I‘ve watched the movie so many times. I love how this scene captures the way they clearly longed for each other while also recognizing their fundamental incompatibility. RIP, Robert Redford.
Robert Redford is on the left, Barbra Streisand is on the right. Her hand is gently touching the back of his neck and he’s holding her arm. They’re looking at each other longingly.

Texas A&M has 79,000 students across all its programs, as a matter of interest. That’s more than every Ivy League undergrad college combined.

Same at our journal, Glossa Psycholinguistics! Submissions are up but the articles are genuine.

This is a great thread, very informative. The solution, I think, is scholar-run journals like our Glossa Psycholinguistics, as well as Glossa: General and Open Mind. These diamond OA journals are flourishing, in part because they have tons of buy-in from the relevant communities.

I used the CVS in Davis on W. Covell. I booked online and there were lots of appointments to choose from!
fernandaedi.bsky.social
My regular UC Davis Health clinic doesn't yet have the covid vaccine either 😞, so thank goodness for CVS! And the vaccine area was super busy; the staff said they've been administering vaccines non-stop since they became available (yay!)

A happy update: just got back from my Covid vaccine appt at my local CVS. No questions, no requests for proof or verification, and no charge!

Has anyone <65 received the new Covid-19 vaccine at a CVS based on the other allowable conditions? I'm in CA and scheduled mine based on having been a smoker (decades ago--shhh), but I'm wondering about the verification procedure. I want to be vaxxed before lecturing to 300+ in a closed room.
