A great visit to Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. Amazing weather for early October.

The trolls welcomed all.

Below is one of five trolls, Roskva.

The trolls were designed and installed, with the help of local workers, by Danish artist Thomas Dambo. He has installations all over the world.

Fragrant fern, Dryopteris fragrans

Dr. Bailey has been studying this area for Dryopteris fragrans for 20 years. 20 years ago only a few specimens. 10 years ago 70 specimens. Now 65 specimens.

The rock face is a very popular rock area.

A paper has been published, but could not find it.

An amateurish attempt to look inside the hole. Able to go in about 6-8 inches, 15-20cm.

Looks like hole was filled in, caved in, or blocked.

25Aug25 - Devastation

Ferns do well in the spring. Ferns have evolved to be understory plants as trees out competed the ferns for the sun.

This is not the first year of devastation. The ferns return next year.

Onoclea sensibilis is a once-cut fern. This is a twice-cut fern.

I don't know the ferns of Japan. The picture looks like Marsh fern (Thelypteris palustris). On iNaturalist.org Marsh fern has been identified in Japan.

Below is a picture of Sensitive Fern on left.
