So what's the book? It's quite right, though, which is why the IBM mainframe computers had (still have, I think) machine instructions for decimal arithmetic. Also, why the decimal module distributed with Python and the DecimalFormat class in Java.

But you can't NOT use it. I go to drag a window a little sideways (for any reason, maybe so I can see another window behind it) and suddenly blip, said window gets wider! It happens all the time and dammit now I can't make it happen!

...the other thing was the effect the industry. Every time a company designed a product, they had to commit to a technology -- knowing that 2 years later, the competition could start designing something half the size or twice as fast.

I try to make this point in my docent tour at the computer history museum, that from 1965 on chip sizes kept doubling, but their cost was relatively static, thus by 2000, the cost per transistor approached zero -- and transistors are functionality...

Swift is very conscious of her influence and careful in public statements, and had a bad scare in Austria. I would be surprised if she made a public political endorsement.
