Though I actually think race and gender should be understood differently. Working in education has let me see some very interesting dynamics of what happens when a 75% female workforce also leads with hiring.

People will load bear "merit" and largely recreate the world they live in currently, and that is not going to actually deal with well, the history.

Anyway, this is all sort of complicated. I also do think that in absence of other pressures, like hires like ("culture fit"). The reality is that I actually do think hiring and admissions (because it's 0/1) does actually suffer from a "if you don't work against it, you are working for it"...

Go look at the 10th grade MCAS for Math and ELA and tell me that a kid shouldn't get at least 60% of that right if we are doing our job. And graduation was closer to 28% in Math and 45%in ELA!

Yale becoming 40% Asian and 5% Black is bad for that mission, as it's very unlikely we will have an Asian leader of the NAACP!

I also do think college admissions is complicated because no one wants to admit that elite universities actually do not want the most academically accommplished people at the age of 18, but the people mostly likely to be donors and leaders in society writ large.

I mean, sigh, i want to have a longer conversation because while I agree with you on point, I also think the reality is that without our thumb on the scale actively, it does seem like the actual powerful industries get really non-black/Hispanic and male very quickly

don't genuflect to him or that other people's priorities and ways of living are also important to them. I also think that while he knows his 'lol, hispanic', he has approximately zero empathy for what it's like to be a not a white man in the world.

If Yglesias had to snap his fingers and magically create his ideal world, it probably would be a decent one. But it would still be one largely ruled by people of a certain tempermant.

Besides the actual critique, it's kind of funny to see Simon be such a Yale Dem (as they existed in the 2000s), who show up to campus and immediately imagine themselves as a field director in Iowa or New Hampshire, so their political convos/thinking is purely outside of campus
