But I could also certainly see why it flew over our (and most people’s) heads when it came out. Turns out this was another movie ultimately saved on release by a Pauline Kael review.

I recognize that I’m looking at it now in the context of Lynch’s whole career and everything I love about it. But yeah, I saw his inspirations (especially the Black Dahlia—wow) and the seeds of what’s to come.

I thought it was wild and great. When it first came out, I saw it in the theater with two teenage friends (both fellow popcorn slingers and movie nerds) and we laughed our asses off at how bad we thought it was.
