i’m not saying he’s at all justified to be the way he is. but i have a father who loves me and i know how much i value that, so i feel sorry for those who lack what i have. that’s all
December 12, 2025 at 3:09 AM
yea, i do, because that doesn’t replace having a father that loves you.

he can choose a new life, but that will always be his father. i pity him for that
December 12, 2025 at 2:20 AM
the skill of close reading poetry? how can you justify that, over all the other things we don’t teach every college student?
December 10, 2025 at 7:50 AM
there is short form prose though. and excerpts can be used.

i’m not questioning the merit in theory, but everyone doesn’t desire the same set of skills. the same way we don’t require probability education for History majors (despite the merit and lifelong application), must everyone develop…

right but to continue your analogy, mathematics is an incredibly vast set of skills that no one could hope to master. so each discipline learns the math they need, often with classes tailored to emphasize the important parts to the discipline. why shouldn’t reading be taught the same way?

“poetry has no peer as a teaching text for close reading”

is this true? and is reading comprehension one single, universally transferable skill? wouldn’t close reading prose better develop the skill of close reading prose?

“appreciation for the use of language” can be developed in many ways without extensive instruction in poetry

this is a pro-gerontocracy opinion. young voters are on discord and candidates should reach them
December 7, 2025 at 12:34 AM
i 100% agree! it’s not a good state of affairs! we need bike infrastructure. but Ed (who has now blocked me) was calling for me to be arrested, not just saying it’s not good
December 6, 2025 at 9:09 PM
your anecdote does not prove that claim though. did you keep yourself safe or did you get lucky? bicyclists get hit by cars all the time. i’m glad it didn’t happen to you, but you’re just assuming that will always be in your control.
December 6, 2025 at 9:00 PM
my point is that it’s not “shifting the risk” it’s removing a large risk from myself and distributing a much smaller risk to others. because it’s worse to get hit by a car than a bike.
December 6, 2025 at 8:57 PM
yes. but for that matter a runner could kill an elderly person. a bike traveling at normal pace is much, much less deadly than a car.
December 6, 2025 at 8:55 PM
ok, i don’t live in boston. i biked for 3 months in los angeles and nearly got hit by a car every other week
December 6, 2025 at 8:53 PM
well as a bicyclist my problems matter more to me. and my problems are more likely to kill me, so i think my selfishness is more justified
December 6, 2025 at 8:51 PM
a bicyclist wears a helmet because they’re going in the street and might get struck by a car.

bicycles hitting pedestrians can cause substantial harm i agree. but obviously way way way less harm than a car. hitting a bicyclist. obviously.
December 6, 2025 at 8:51 PM
no i’m just saying that the risk for me is greater than the risk for you. which is obviously true
December 6, 2025 at 8:48 PM
if you get hit by a bike it’s the worst day of your week. if i get hit by a car i will die
December 6, 2025 at 12:04 AM
my commute is too far to go on foot and i can’t afford a car
December 6, 2025 at 12:03 AM
not my fault there’s no bike infrastructure. i would prefer to not get hit by a car
December 5, 2025 at 11:53 PM
i was referencing a famous quote. you avoid doing crimes because it’s wrong. you avoid making mistakes because they are harmful to yourself in some way

There’s an established penalty for ordering the killing of shipwrecked sailors (even during a war, which we are manifestly not in) and we should apply that penalty. I would say it’s vitally important to apply that penalty, in fact.
