Why move? While we love a lot about our current location, we’ve struggled with dwindling foot traffic, low sales, and expensive maintenance issues.

For some reason I really did not expect painting 5 dragon designs without any photo or 3d elements in a month and a half would be this hard. I was uh, very wrong. Very nearly reached my breaking point getting these guys done but I sure am happy with how they came out.

closeup of the head. I had to create a number of new brushes to make the crystal glint textural elements. I'm really pleased with the way those came out and they work super well.

Closeup of the arm. I really, really like the way the scale plates on the elbow area came out.

larger view of the wingspan. Like an insane person I articulated and straightened out the body and wings of the damn thing to ensure its proportional accuracy. A thing only I would care about lol

Closeup of the breath attack. I had to do all 5 of the breath attacks in like 2 days so they didnt get quite the same level of polish. Though I am really pleased with a few new brush tricks I figured out doing them.

A lot of what I do when I post art here is talk about how I had some break through or whatever but man I really did have one here. The way I started thinking about specular highlights completely changed when I did these. I just understand how to paint better now I guess 🤷

Head and neck closeup. Man I don’t want to brag too much but how in the hell did I paint those neck scales?? It’s a mystery to me and I’m the one who did it!

Body closeup. Im really pleased with the way I bridged the scale flow from armadillo, to croc to pangolin. I really wanted to up my scale flow game on these guys.

Wingspan closeup. I tell you that uncurling that spiraling tail was a headache but this is what we do for cool shit.

Breath attack detail. I know there’s only so many ways to color fire but I really like the way this came out, soupy black and sickly yellow, it was a lot of fun to come up with.

Because it was the most traditional dragon shape of the bunch that actually made it the hardest. Had to find more novel ways to eke out a bit more juice in the design. In addition to the scale type, I focused on the more novel folding wing shapes.

Torso closeup. The thing is actually supposed to burrow somehow in the lore but it’s like so arboreal coded. I actually gave it armadillo limb anatomy even if you wouldn’t notice that at first glance.

More than any of the others this one had a lot of gem bits in the hide. I’m already such a fan of painting osteoderms that doing crystalline ones were a special treat, a painter’s delight 🤠

Face closeup. The face of this guy was by far the easiest one. It just came together real smooth. Who knew that combining a rhino face and a rhino iguana face would work so easily

Arm closeup. Really enjoyed blending crocodile and big cat arm anatomy on this boyo

Wingspan view. I snuck some stripes in on the wings as a juicy little detail just for me, real sickos know what I mean

It was quite a fun bit to paint out an entire dragon made of sapphire without photobashing. It basically became a material study at a certain point. Harder to understand now with the material render but I’m really proud of the scale flow on this guy.

Head closeup. I really enjoyed getting to design out such an extravagant head display. It really clicked when I treated the floating horn bits as unguals and the horns as phalanges.

Torso closeup. Man I’m really proud of the scales on the upper arm and the calf into knee.

Breath attack detail. Had fun trying to interpret the psionic wave effects. Just a lot of messing around with fun Photoshop filters and layer settings

My biggest artfight piece yet against two of my friends who are in a Strixhaven-themed DND game with me.

The dino in front is my character Aardonyx, the pink gecko in the middle is ~Bones-N-Candles' character Prime, and the white kenku in the back is ~installation-wizard's character Schliff!
