Democrats Call Out Governor Justice for Wasting Taxpayer Dollars on Special Session to Benefit Out-of-State Corporations

WVDP Chair Mike Pushkin today criticized Governor Jim Justice for proposing a costly special session of the Legislature to push through a tax break for powerful out-of-state corporations. “Justice is squandering taxpayer dollars to hold a special session to pass a sweetheart deal for a special interest, out-of-state corporation,” said Pushkin. “This is an outrageous abuse of power and a blatant disregard for the people of WV, who deserve a government that prioritizes their needs—not backroom deals for corporate cronies.” Pushkin also pointed out that the Governor’s decision to call a special session stems from his lack of faith in the incoming Legislature and new Governor to pass his special interest bill. “The fact that Jim Justice is rushing this through now, instead of allowing the next Legislature and Governor to address it, speaks volumes about his lack of confidence in their priorities and the will of the voters,” Pushkin continued. “It’s no wonder—he knows WVians are tired of politicians catering to out-of-state corporations instead of investing in our schools, roads, and communities.” The special session comes at an unnecessary expense to taxpayers, with costs that could have been avoided by simply waiting for the regular legislative session in two months. “At a time when PEIA is in crisis, public employees are bracing for massive premium increases, and retirees are being hit hard, Justice has decided to spend taxpayer money to placate corporate interests. This decision is tone-deaf and emblematic of an administration that has consistently put the needs of the wealthy and well-connected over the needs of everyday WVians. We should all call on the Governor and legislators to refocus their priorities and call off this needless, ill advised, special session.
