Closeup of the piece quoted. The zoom focuses on the pair kissing. Midsummer spells as I am Finnish with no deep knowledge of Nordic paganism other than traditions I’ve grown up with, so I can’t say broad statements of midsummer spells (I know other countries have them too, but I’m only talking of mine own lived experience here!). These spells are supposed to be done during the night of midsummer eve – often naked and often with intention of finding answers in amorous matters. The spell Wreg has performed here is a very famous one: pick 7 different flowers from 7 different meadows, put them under your pillow and you’ll see a dream of your spouse-to-be. But why these specific flowers? In Wreg’s hair are red clover and sneezewort, which symbolize luck and courage. In his hand is yellow toadflax and blindeyes symbolizing joy, vitality, and dreams. The ginger knight, who is an unknown man shrouded by his visor and armour is holding oxeye daisy for purity of heart and innocence. With it are paired two flowers well-known for their tie with death: tansy and blue cornflower – other used as a burial flower to repel smells and other things, and other as a memorial flower for fallen. So what does this all mean? Wreg is a hopeless romantic of a man, who might not believe in spells but still performed one on midsummer eve hoping to see if there is someone for him waiting to love and cherish him. What he doesn’t realize in his overwhelming joy is that his dream depicts a man long gone. He was a knight, who unfortunately fell in battle. Other possibility is that he wished so ardently to see a man of his dreams, that he conjured someone who seems to share similarities with a knight he used to have a crush on as a young man (he really did have an awakening while watching a particular ginger knight jousting). For personal note; I enjoy still life symbolism a lot, which was an inspiration here. I’m also currently reading through Whose Middle Ages? (2019), where I thought Bleeke’s analysis on knights, armor, and masculinity was an eye-opener and has stuck to me.

Dan is just pure sunshine despite the horrors, so a spirit of hope was drawn to him. Now they're a crime (darkspawn) fighting duo 🙌

Dragon Age AU my Warden OC! Turned my boy Dan into a Grey Warden :) Dan is a muscular human man with short dark hair with a streak of white. He has a dark trimmed beard and a wide friendly smile as he looks off to the right. The first reference image is Dan in black pants with silvery greaves/boots covering his lower legs. He's wearing a loose white tunic which exposes his arms. The second reference image is Dan's armor. He has a metal breastplate overtop of a padded blue coat with chainmail underneath. Tall leather gloves go up to his biceps and have additional metal plating on his right arm. He normally wields a sword and shield! Dan just keeps smiling despite the horrors :) Dragon Age OCs! A spirit of hope that follows my Warden. Text at the top of the image provides a little context for Hope and the Warden it follows. On the left: "HOPE This spirit of hope crossed over from the fade to be with Warden Daniel Rodriguez. It appears to him as an old companion, Warden Jean-Luc Rodier. Hope has possessed the Warden's sword offering spiritual power to Daniel in his fight against Darkspawn. In exchange Dan provides hope protection through his deeds, and heroic disposition saving the spirit from its corruption into Despair." And on the right: "DESPAIR The pain and anguish of this world constantly threatens to corrupt Hope into a Despair Demon. The love Dan and Hope have for each other keeps both of them fighting to give others a chance at peace and a joyful life." A spirit of hope appears as a tall nude man draped in a flowing cloak. Their entire form is tinted blue. They hold a glowing white sword in one hand against their chest, while the edges of their cloak grows tattered and dark with a toothy maw beginning to form. Other images show Hope's face barely peeking out of the maw of Despair. And another showing a full body walking while their cloak is covered in teeth and mouths as Despair literally devours Hope. The glowing white sword begins to darken under the touch of one of the demonic hands. A collection of illustrations featuring my Dragon Age OCs Hope and Warden Rodriguez Top left depicts a bust shot of Hope looking to the left. Their profile is barely visible under the shadows of their cloak. Top right is another bust shot. Dan is wearing his armor and looks back at Hope who stands behind him. Dan winks probably telling some dumb joke, or being stupid, but Hope smiles at him always. Bottom left Dan tenderly kisses the blade of his sword with some flickers of Hope's spiritual power visible climbing up the metal. A ritual before combat that makes the Warden and Spirit feel more connected. Bottom right. Dan lounges on some sunny hill somewhere arms folded behind his head. His eyes are closed and he has a small piece of grass in his mouth. He looks very at ease. Hope sits behind him looking down at him lovingly.

A king and knight, who both clearly yearn for each other, have found a private moment together. Both are in full regalia and armor, as though they'd only been able to step away for this one brief moment. The king leans in to kiss the knight, and the knight draws him closer despite making a half-hearted attempt to keep up the appearance of being on duty.

My first completed illustration of the year is a follow up to one of my most popular illustrations (linked below). This new one is titled "Fealty." 😁
We peer through ornate curtains at a king kneeling before a man in armor who stands before him. The king gazes up at the knight and is in the process of shrugging out of his ornate robes, which trail behind him. The knight cradles the king's face in one hand, and the king has a hand on the knight's armored leg.
