The car was perfectly fine before using the MFG charger, we had rapid charged before with no problems. Two other cars using this MFG station also failed to get the chargers working, they could still drive away though. Will update when MG's HV technician has a look at it next week.

The error being caused by a software bug when plugging into a failing rapid charger is known by MG and was fixed in a software update 2 years ago. It could still be this bug and our car was never updated. If it isn't however, then these chargers really did cause some damage.

So to conclude;
Avoid MFG chargers at all costs as they are known to damage vehicles.

RAC wait times are disgusting and we were far from the longest you can wait.

MG’s warranty is great but would be good if they had a better system to move broken down vehicles to a service centres.

They said the issue is a software bug triggered by these not very well built chargers.

In addition to the car problem, the RAC wait times and paying for more transport, the EV bays were also limited to a 90 minute parking time. So we’re also expecting a £100 fine for getting stuck there.

The RAC left us waiting for over 7 hours in the middle of the night. We got recovered and they brought it further than their usual range to get it home for us.

MG have said they can cover the fix under warranty but we have to pay to have the car moved to their service centre.

…voltage from the charger even though the cable was disconnected. This code can only be cleared by MG’s proprietary software that only their service centres have.

This meant the only option was wait to be recovered by the RAC to get the car home.

This message said ‘Vehicle Control System Fault’ and the car would not enter the ready to drive mode, meaning we couldn’t move the car at all.

A quick google search reveals others having the issue at MFG chargers. The vehicle prevents power on to stop damage from the unusual…

After it inevitably failed, we got back in the car to go elsewhere. We did note a message that appeared on the car’s screen while trying to charge which said ‘Abnormal Grid Connection’ which we just put down to the charge failing.
Upon trying to turn the car on it displayed another message.

Unfortunately the only other chargers nearby were more MFG chargers so we thought we’d give them a try since they were different models. And while we likely could’ve made it to another charger, we thought it best to try. We had three attempts at getting the charger to complete the handshake.

Most of the time it’s just an error on the charger and no charge starts. Yesterday was different. We initially tried an MFG charger at a Morrisons. This charger locked the cable to the car and it took some time trying to unlock it.

Since we couldn’t charge we went to the next nearest one.

I have never been able to successfully start a charge on any GeniePoint/MFG charger on either a Gen 2 Nissan Leaf with Chademo or a 2022 MG ZSEV with CCS2.

It’s still usually worth a try since others seem to be having success at the chargers and when you need to plug in you just go for it.
