Uh oh. Trouble follows our duo wherever they go... But they got each other's backs, no matter how dire the circumstances. They make quite a team, don't they? 🤝

Mission Log 03 by N. Wolfwood; status: Coworkers.

Had a cargo run lined up. Supposed to be simple: pick up a crate, drop it off, get paid. Nothing flashy, nothing loud. Needle Noggin's face lit up like he'd seen a damn miracle when he learned that the job was, in his words, "honest work." Figured even with him riding shotgun, we could make it through without incident.

Soon as we dock, some jackasses show up. Bounty hunters. Not just some backwater gang, either; real guns, real numbers. I don't know how they keep catching wind of us, but it's not like my so-called co-captain looks exactly discreet.

It should've been a slaughter. Outnumbered, outgunned, boxed in tight with no good cover. Was weighing how many of them l'd have to drop to get back to the ship. I would've handled it; been doing this long enough. Would've been messy though. Fatal for every bastard looking our way.

But then there's him. Spikey moves like the bullets already told him where they're going. Fast, clean, precise. Every one of his shots finds its mark and takes the fight out of a man without taking his life. Buys us space without painting the walls red.

By the time we punched back out into the black, nobody was dead. Not a one.

Don't get me wrong. He's still a walking target. I swear the universe rearranges itself just to see how much trouble it can put him in. And now, by extension, me. But he's no amateur.

So yeah. The job's botched, I'm down a payday, and our faces are probably plastered across two more systems after today. But he's still here, and so am I. He shoots straight when it counts. Not sure yet if that makes him more dangerous, or the only reason I'm still alive.

Mission Log 01 by N. Wolfwood; status: Partners In Crime.

Picked up a stray today. Tall, blonde, wearing a stupid coat you could spot from orbit. Was standing there in the freighter bay, practically dislocating his arm trying to wave down pilots. Looked like an idiot over there with ships peeling out the second they saw him. Should've been my first clue.

Figured maybe he had a credit problem. Maybe had a hygiene issue. Maybe both. But I've got fuel to burn, bills breathing down my neck, and he looked desperate enough to pay. Thought to myself, I've bunked with worse. How bad could it be? He offered me a fat stack for a ride out, no questions asked. That should've been my second clue.

A few hours later, after outrunning a damn fleet of Federation vessels, I find out why nobody wanted him: the guy's wanted in six systems. Six. Charges ranging from property damage to "acts of planetary destabilization," whatever the hell that means. Could be propaganda. Could be he's just a magnet for chaos.

His name's Vash. Vash. What kinda name is that? Thought about dumping him at the next port. Guy talks too much. Eats too much. Laughs at his own jokes. Too stupid to be the criminal mastermind his bounty makes him out to be. A bounty, I might add, that would pay off every credit I owe and then some.

I ain't no saint. I considered turning him in. Right up until I found out I'm now wanted as an accomplice. Just for giving the guy a lift. No good deed goes unpunished or something like that.

He's still paying, so I guess I'm stuck with him until I figure this shit out. Still keeping one hand close to the airlock controls. Just in case. And if he so much as leaves crumbs all over the cockpit again, I might actually use it.

Mission Log 02 by V. Saverem; status: Temporary Allies.

"Mission logs." Very official. Very serious. As the new co-captain of this definitely-not-stolen vessel, I figured I'd give this a try myself. Good way to pass the time, and if anyone ever digs these up, they'll see a complete record of all the wonderful memories Wolfwood and I are making together! (He secretly loves that phrasing even though he says he doesn't.)

He wasn't too happy when he found out about my bounty, but in my defense, I wasn't hiding it—he just didn't ask. I only needed a ride out of the sector before the Federation boxed me in. Getting him tangled in an interstellar chase sequence with explosions, hull damage, and enough yelling to rupture eardrums definitely wasn't part of the plan. He really does have a colourful vocabulary, though.

I made him a deal. Since I very innocently and very inadvertently dragged him into all this, I'm going to stick around and help with his jobs. I may have accidentally stumbled across a suspicious number of logs and messages from debt collectors and "debt collectors." The guy got me out in one piece, the least I can do is return the favour. Besides, he strikes me as someone who doesn't get much honest work, so maybe I can help him come by a few credits without the gunfire this time.

Wolfwood pretends he hates having me here, but l've noticed him making extra coffee in the mornings. He scowls if I smile too much. Scowls if I talk too much. I think he'd scowl even if I just sat there breathing. It's kind of his thing.

And if he ends up steering us right into an asteroid belt and
someone finds these logs among the wreck, let me clear his
name: Nicholas D. Wolfwood is innocent.

(Except for thievery, tax fraud, and littering on a terraformed moon.)

Excerpt from "Liebesleid":

"Okay," Vash sighs. "Fine."

And then, surprisingly quickly, Vash is lurching closer and abruptly slumping against Nicholas's side.

Nicholas almost jumps away from him, not expecting the proximity and more than aware of the disgusting state of his body. "Hey! Spikey, I'm-"

"Warm," Vash interrupts, quiet but firm.

Nicholas's response dies on his tongue as Vash's hand grabs the front of his shirt, Vash's head and shoulder digging into his ribs. They're still healing, and it hurts, but Vash continues, "Breathing. Alive."

And Nicholas settles and lets Vash do what he wants.
