Footage taken in November at Kaatz Bros., a fur farm in Savanna, Illinois. Animals at the farm are also exploited for their urine, which is used to create trapping lures and other products.

Mink farming may be finished in Illinois! Activists visited the only remaining mink farm in the state, the Monteleone Mink Ranch in Elgin. Although not all of the sheds were closely inspected, most were empty or in very bad shape. (If the farm is still operating, it is a much smaller operation.)

The City of Coalville, Utah has approved plans to redevelop the property where the Black family mink farm was located. The mink sheds were recently taken down. For decades, the farm operated next to the county rodeo arena. Because of the mink next door, it was popularly known as the "smelly rodeo."

Activists have confirmed that Fox Valley Foxes in Prophetstown, Illinois is no longer operating. That leaves two, maybe three, fox fur farms remaining in the state.

The Harrison County Sheriff and local news media are reporting that many foxes and mink were released from cages at the Tremel fur farm (pictured) in Woodbine, Iowa early in the morning of October 21.

The Dixon mink farm in Bluffdale, Utah will not be reopening. An application for a business license has been denied by the city; fur farming is no longer a permitted use of the property. The Dixon farm had been the subject of complaints for years from neighbors sick of the flies and smells.

The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service is discontinuing its annual survey of mink pelt production and sales. The mink farming industry has shrunk so much that it's not worth the effort and expense to collect the data. That's more bad news for the industry.

What was once the world's largest fur auction house now sits empty. Kopenhagen Fur's enormous headquarters outside Copenhagen, Denmark-- including auction hall, warehouse, and design studio-- is for sale. The building opened in 1963, and hosted its final fur auction in 2024.

We can now confirm that the Circle R Fox Ranch in Bellville, Ohio is closed. Watchtowers were built on fox farms so farmers could observe the animals without disturbing them, particularly during breeding season. At this farm, the tower used to overlook hundreds of cages (grassy area in the photo).

2024 was the last year mink were killed on the River Jordan Mink Ranch (pictured) in Eagle Mountain, Utah, one of many fur farms that have closed recently in the state. We're happy to see the sheds taken down, and cages that once imprisoned thousands of mink sitting empty.

Last week the #USDA released its annual survey of mink pelt production, and the news was bad for the industry! In 2024, 771,200 mink were killed on fur farms in the U.S. That's a horrible number, but it's less than half what it was 3 years prior. And 5 years ago, 2 million more mink were killed!

A fur farm in Ohio is missing hundreds of mink after an Independence Day raid by animal activists. Dennis Tonn summed up the situation at his farm in the city of Massillon, "Someone cut a hole in the fence and let 'em out. It's hard enough to make a living without this [expletive], you know."

How long can fox farmers hang on if they can't sell pelts for a profit? At Saga Furs’ June auction, only 39% of all fox pelts offered for sale found a buyer, and according to Saga, the prices they sold for "are still unprofitable for the producers."

Today, a majority of European Union member states voted to add the American mink to its list of invasive species. Once the changes take effect in 2027, the breeding of mink will be banned throughout the EU! It was a decision that the fur trade lobby has fought against for years.

In Rhode Island, mink can be found in marshes, near streams and in coastal areas. Mink have friends in the Rhode Island House of Representatives, which last week voted overwhelmingly in support of a bill to ban the sale of new fur products from animals killed on fur farms!

The Mid-Missouri Fox Farm was the only fur farm in the state of Missouri, and the southernmost farm on our list (FinalNail.com). The property has been sold, and it looks like the new owners are not continuing in the fur business. Although a few sheds remain, the rows of fox cages have been removed.
