The prison population stands at 87,094.

There are 153 more people in prison than there were last week.

By the prison service's own measure of safe and decent accommodation, there is room for only 79,428 people in the system. The population is 7,666 above this level.

There are 87,094 people in prison today, an increase of 153 on last week, and 1026 higher than four weeks ago. Indeed, this is the highest figure since last October.
