Soil and restoration ecology, art and craft, amateur circus, 🏳️‍🌈, furious to have been unjustly fired from my USGS dream job
Judge Alsup working hard on a Saturday to restore our positions and undo the wrongs. May his egg yolks never crack, may he never lock himself out of his house or car, and may his bookmarks never fall from the pages.

BLM is the least glamorous land management agency and the one I’ve been most proud to serve. These folks constantly work to balance the conflicting interest of so many users with the least number of employees per acre. This land provides hunting, fishing, hiking, grazing, energy production, and more

Did you know you can call the Department of the Interior, at 202-208-3100, and demand that they reinstate their illegally fired employees? Do it today! We have heard nothing from within DOI, but other agencies are making it right. I have been working for or with DOI since 2014

Almost exactly a decade ago I drove to Death Valley to experience the blessing of a Mojave storm in a field of flowers. Many people see the Mojave as sparse, barren, but it’s full of life waiting for the opportune moment to spring forth and grow.

Almost all science will seem wasteful if you believe that profit indicates worth. Ecology doesn’t generate wealth for the scientists, but it does save money and resources by improving our land health and management practices. It’s a service provided for the society we live in.

I’ve always had a hard time just throwing away my retired field clothes. These garments served me so well through so much; they feel imbued with big sky and dusty days. Joy and power and hard work. I’m repurposing these pants into patches to share with my fellow fired Feds.

Sneak peak of the block I’m carving when I should be at the office conducting research about wildfire and drought to support land management planning. I’m going to make patches to share with my fellow club members

Minutes after I walked across the stage at my college graduation, my mom and I drove 24hrs continuously so I could make the mandatory training for my NPS job. I spent the summer with a 30lb pack on my back, in absolute awe. I moved into my car after; a standard part of a young biologists life.

I first learned what field ecology really was in the summer of 2012. I was considering dropping out of college to work on farms, but got into a paid internship program. On this prairie I learned plant Id, become comfortable alone in the backcountry, and revised my entire life plan.

Filling out my unemployment claim and had to explain why I was fired, and why my work was found unsatisfactory, which of course it was not, so now I’m going on little tirades in these response boxes.

@altnps.bsky.social I should be sitting down at my desk right now. Instead I’m at home, opening up an unemployment claim.

So I guess I have a lot more time now to stay atop the wave of news we’re drowning in, to fight against what is happening everywhere, to build community in this new town, and to release my emotional pressure valve through art

After a decade of dreaming I finally got a job with the USGS, doing science to support public lands and land managers. I got fired today for no cause, against the wishes of everyone in my chain of command.
