To put it bluntly, if you miscalulate the price of your work and find it out later...well, sorry, but that's a You problem then. Not the client's.

While I can get it that a comm can turn out to be more work than expected, if the price has been agreed and paid, its then sadly the artist's problem.
Things can always be discussed, especially if you are civil. But you can't just demand more out of thr blue from a client who has already paid x.x

Yeah, at that point, it seems to often be a matter of pride. It'd be best to swallow your pride, admit that you can't get it done and give a refund.
Worst is to let it slide and hope that the client forgets it. People rarely do, and it leaves a stain on your rep as an artist

Yes, sometimes life happens. That is just a fact.
But its then YOUR responsibility to settle it with the client. Its not their job to come digging for answers. Triple so, if they have ALREADY PAID YOU!

Hearing of people having to wait for years without communication from the artist makes me cringe

So is everyone else. Anything anyone can offer can be offered bt someone else.

But they don't want that other, hypothetical better person. They want you. The one they know and have grown attatched to over time.

There is no special ingredient. That is just how it happened to play out.
