This did not come out of nowhere. The collapse was inevitable and long signposted. What is staggering is the pace, and that it is being played out through slogans and memes while the world burns. The fall was baked in. The recklessness is new.

Badenoch’s sacking of Jenrick marks the end of a long, inevitable arc. The hard right moved from Thatcherite insurgency, to ERG power base, to Brexit dominance. Now it is splitting off to Reform. Purity politics won arguments, but cannot govern and is breaking the party.
