This was a tactic in apartheid South Africa. Political prisoners, usually ones without an outside network of supporters, would 'jump from windows to escape,' or 'accidentally fall down a lift shaft.' The intention was to intimidate other people who were being interrogated at the time.

And a brilliant song writer.

He'll be missed, but it's hard to be sad over a life so well lived.

This is like someone spruiking horses when the railway has come through town.

He's irredeemably out of phase with the new paradigm on the left.

Why is this an issue? Twitter blue ticked a whole bunch of people it thought would be valuable to the brand.

Righteous people with a blue tick are a valuable source of knowledge on what the evil bastards are up to. They're unlikely to be access limited even with 'unpopular' opinions.

I don't know what's difficult about this. ICE just shot a woman in the face on camera.

'I promise no-one will get shot in the face' requires no explanation even if you are functionally incapable of seeing a better way of regulating the border.

It's the easiest home run you're ever going to get.

Damn you! I just nearly spat coffee on my machine.

Chaotic good.

I have been unfortunate enough to see two struggles from the foundations: the Troubles in Northern Ireland and apartheid South Africa.

The South African Government banned Pink Floyd's 'Another brick in the wall,' and of all things, this was the trigger for many anti-apartheid activists. Art works.
January 15, 2026 at 7:52 PM
I agree with you on most things, but not this.

Art always plays a role in building the collective consciousness which underpins mass movements. Mass movements make change.

The Andor praise is a bit overblown, but it has shown the 'posting is protest' lot that posting is not enough.

Mosh pits are finally proving their usefulness.

A stomach ulcer. I've heard it's a side effect of being a fascist.
January 14, 2026 at 7:35 PM
The tech will not save you.

Seriously, though, this is just another thing they'll cover up or not wear. If you want a solution, you have to address the real problem, which is inherent in the organisation itself.
January 14, 2026 at 7:08 PM
Stomach ulcers are a known side effect of being a fascist.
January 14, 2026 at 7:01 PM
I've always wanted lapels that get stuck in my armpits.
January 14, 2026 at 6:58 PM
The thing about the Federal Reserve is at first, it won't really hit the economy.

It's like driving without brakes. You don't know there's a problem until you need the brakes, but by that time it's too late to avoid a catastrophe.

Macs were definitely not a common desktop at the time (though they would get there pretty quickly). The 3.5s were called floppies by everyone I knew, probably because of the ubiquity of Microsoft machines in workplaces and education institutions.

Microsoft machines were half the price of a Mac.
January 11, 2026 at 7:13 PM
Was there, it's a floppy.
January 11, 2026 at 7:07 PM
Is this an NYT thing.

When an ICE vehicle drives towards you, you probably have every reason to fear for your life.

(Don't shoot people, though.)
January 10, 2026 at 7:17 PM
You should make it your life's purpose to hunt down the bastard who removed that page.

The MAGA mob are fucking with the bag and the money people are starting to get jumpy.
January 6, 2026 at 7:01 PM
You are a prize fool.

The US was in Vietnam in 1964. Protest really took off after the Tet Offensive in 1968.

That's four whole years.
January 6, 2026 at 6:30 AM
The US does the same shit time after time and somehow thinks it's going to be different THIS time.
January 5, 2026 at 5:59 AM
Is that why they are called baby boomers?
