grah...this happened after a windows update, I can usually see them fine on the computer, but when I upload them, they turn into those squares, but then if I, for instance, upload them to imgur, it works fine, which is great as long as I don't mind doing 2-3x the work, which I do

Well that at least explains what they were thinking in greater depth than I could find elsewhere, thanks for that. It still seems to me they could have kept the original functionality and simply added additional features using the new backend, but I wasn't on the programming team, so IDK ;-)
