speaking in non-dominant patterns and using non-standard grammar has nothing empirically to do with ‘bad behaviour’ but it has lots to do with it ideologically

what does ‘misbehaviour’ sound like? in new open access work i ask this question in the context of school discipline policies, looking at how ideologies of ‘im/proper language’ and ‘im/proper behaviour’ coalesce and get co-constructed with one another. doi.org/10.1080/0962...

language ideologies are never just about language. here i show how they materialise in school discipline policies to construct representations of 'badly behaved' children. www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

I am delighted to share this article regarding neoliberal governments (Conservative/Labour 1997-2024) framing of ESOL provision in the UK.

One week to go! I'm looking forward to the opportunity to share and discuss empowering experiences of ESOL in adult education across Ireland/UK with my colleague and fellow ESOL activist, Dr Melanie Cooke.

The Oxford Handbook of Language & Prejudice, edited by Jane Setter, Sender Dovchin, and yours truly, rearticulates and expands upon the connections between language and prejudice.

Funny....All of a sudden, no one's performing arbitrary sex-change operations on unexpecting grade-schoolers anymore.

It’s been 30 years since I arrived in America. As a 12 year old refugee, I could have never imagined I would have the opportunity to represent the community that welcomed me with open arms 🥰. I'll be forever grateful for the American people who gave me and my family a second chance at life.

This is shocking. ITV reporting that even those with extreme disabilities in the unfit to work category are likely to lose money under new government plans. Charities have branded the move catastrophic

across 563 school behaviour policies, i found that notions of 'misbehaviour' coalesce with a whole constellation of linguistic features. of course, these linguistic features are not empirically connected to 'misbehaviour', but they are strongly ideologically connected.
a large circle with the word 'misbehaviour' in it. around the edges of the circle are the following: slang, informal language, absence of politeness markers, basic vocabulary, incomplete sentences, non-standard grammar, interrupts, inarticulate, loud, mumbles, not silent, does not retain eye contact
