Another week, another beautiful item spotted in our Reading Room at Kew! These incredible drawings of 'submersed algae' are from Sir William Hooker's collection (safely stored within our Archives). Check out the incredible detail in each line 👇
#KewLA
A close-up of a coloured illustration of a brown algae. There is a central 'stem' with equally thick sections branching off from it. A coloured illustration of an algae that resembles a bushel of grass. The stems are tightly packed towards the bottom of the illustration and branch outwards towards the top, much like wheat or grass. Two partial coloured illustrations on overlaying pages. The page on the top shows an illustration at the bototm of the picture, which could be a close-up or a cross-section of an algae. Small green squares are grouped, resembling illustrations of cells, and small black circular specs are grouped together across the surface. The illustration on the page below is only partial and also shows a cross section of a beige-brown algae.

"(...) biology, which, like philosophy, IS its own history; and a study of the course, which biological science has taken, confirms the idea that repeated scrutiny of its embryonic phases is essential to its progress."

That Australian woman who was sentenced for putting death-cap mushrooms in her family's beef Wellington?

Her conviction was helped by the scientific evidence in the world's herbaria -- which themselves are being closed (rapidly and worryingly) around the world. therevelator.org/endangered-h...

Look at this beauty, freshly returned from conservation! “Fleurs, fruits et feuillages choisis de la flore et de la pomone de l'Ile de Java” (1863) by Berthe van Nooten is one of my favourite items in the @linneansociety.bsky.social library, with firework fruits and flowers on every page.

Our team recently came across these beautiful drawings of wild flowers in Libya. They were made by Jocelyn Russell in 1940s. Her Mechanised Transport Corps was stationed in North Africa during WWII and it was during this time that she made illustrations of the plants she saw. #KewLA #Wildflowers

Finally finished extracting and plotting all the locations in Jamaica that Hans Sloane (1660-1753) mentioned in his work, the Voyage to the Islands. Unsurprisingly, they are mostly in the south-central part of the island, but also show his trip north

The single outlier on the south-west coast Sloane found "very plentifully floating along the Coast of the Island [Jamaica] by Pedro Point", which he presumably reached by boat. Here's his specimen (currently called Syringodium filiforme, Manatee grass), and distribution from GBIF
Specimen of a seagrass collected by Hans Sloane in 1686 or 1687, and mounted by him in the first volume of his Jamaican plant (HS1, f. 19) Distribution map of the seagrass, showing that it is found all around the Caribbean coasts

In today's Poetry Clinic, I address the question of how to carry forest's quiet with us. For me, the best approach is writing: note-taking while I am in the forest quiets my mind, writing up the notes afterwards seals the memories.
