I can only assume people are taking it to task for being graphic, and I totally understand if that triggers someone, but that does not make this a bad movie. Yes, it's about a famous boxer. It's also about a woman under terrifying control with no opportunity to explore her actual identity

Also didn't realize Sydney Sweeney had a performance like this in her. But Merrit Wever, she's a monster of a mother with a line that hangs over the film like a dark cloud, as if taking abuse is normal and what's expected of Christy

And honestly, anyone who thinks Ben Foster is playing a cartoon character depiction of domestic abuse can fuck off. His quietness and calmness before erupting into rage when it's not even expected nails the horrifying unpredictability of abusers

Looks like I'm alone on an island but #Christy is terrific and more than a boxing film. it's about identity, repression, a scarily realistic portrayal of domestic abuse, and what unfortunately happens when you kill every piece of that identity to make proud a family who would never accept you

And my deeply cynical take is that it will never happen because the big shots love having that established hierarchy and being at the top. It is unreal how the most incredible job in the world can also frustrate so much to the point where articles like this are likely accurate

I still need to read the article, but one of the most infuriating things is when someone much higher up on the totem pole tells you, "That's just part of the game." Well, maybe someone needs to blow up this archaic industry that showed us how easy access could be for everyone during the pandemic
