The way things are going, there’s a fair chance ICE will just grab him on arrival and throw him in the gulag with all the other “enemy aliens”.

To clarify, Janan Ganesh wasn’t advocating a ‘United States of Europe’ position. He was saying it is a discernible direction of travel on the right.
I’m less convinced. It will take the right in the UK some time to get there, if they ever do.

British conservatives, with their Atlanticist and/or Little Englander biases, are one of the main reasons why this never happened. Our Conservative Party has a long way to go before moving to the “United States of Europe position” suggested by Janan Ganesh. Other European parties may be quicker.

Around 1990, as the Single Market approached, Marxism Today warned of a more integrated ‘heavily armed Europe’.
At the time I thought ‘they make that sound like a bad thing’. Given where we are now I wish they’d been right. I’ve long been of the view that the UK took a wrong turn after Suez.

Ok, here's a different proposal: a zany Film 4 comedy about a bunch of hipsters trying to make a film about this story just before it falls in the sea, risking their lives to film on the actual site and get trapped there. Simon Pegg, Simon Farnaby, and some other Simon who was on TV 25 years ago.
