To achieve #30x30 governments need to first protect those who depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. Implementation has to centre equity with small scale fishers for marine protection to be fair and effective. @riseup4theocean.bsky.social #UNOC3

There is something horribly sobering about this.

The deep sea abyssal plains of the Pacific have existed basically unchanged for roughly 80 million years. Over a period of just a couple of weeks in 1979, we changed it during an experimental mining operation.

Bottom trawling, dragging a heavy net across the seafloor, has been compared to burning down a forest to catch rabbits.

Sweden starting to ban this in sensitive habitats is my #EarthOptimism #OceanOptimism for today.

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that industrial marine activities, such as bottom fishing, deep sea mining, marine energy development processes, oil and gas extraction, and marine construction can disrupt the carbon found in seabed sediments 👇 oceanographicmagazine.com/news/does-se...

The implementation of this Bill is a matter of common sense for the small fisheries of this country, for the wildlife in our marine protected areas, and for all of us who depend on a healthy planet 👏https://www.standard.co.uk/news/politics/friends-of-the-earth-labour-mps-david-goliath-b1206180.html
MP calls for ban on ‘bottom trawling’ of seabeds in marine protected areas
Katie White compared bottom trawling, which is the act of dragging heavy nets across the seabed, with ‘ripping up an orchard to pick an apple’.

Whaling causes increased stress in whale populations. 🐋

Sadly whales are more stressed than ever due to human-driven issues such as climate change, pollution, decreasing prey availability and underwater noise pollution.
