"Not a real book" bonus: HOLLOW WHISPERS OF THE WIND by @florencechien.com (historical fiction), her next novel currently on submission. I had the honor to be the first person to beta read it and it is SO GOOD. I don't understand why editors aren't fighting to death for it in a ring or something.

THE REVENANT OF SUROLIFIA by @florencechien.com (political fantasy): another favorite I knew I would love before reading it, but I didn't expect to love Lucas (the protagonist) so much.

Make writer friends, read each other's works and be critique partners for each other. Besides that, read books in your genre and analyze them, read craft books, self edit and infinitum. Also, you don't have to get a perfect book to your betas. It just needs to be good enough by your standards

To add: alphas and CPs are ppl I say "this is half baked, something isn't right with XYZ but I'm stumped, maybe you can have a look and we can bounce ideas?" Betas are "this is the completed and polished ms, let me know of your overall thoughts"

I typically give my betas a version of the manuscript that's as close to being final as possible. If it's literally a work in progress or an earlier rough draft, the ppl reading it are alpha readers or critique partners, and I let them know ahead of time the role they have and the state of the ms.
