Those ‘AI’ companies make too much noise for stories about the great use cases for LLMs to reach the general public. It’s not a new problem in science, take GMOs: incredible life saving technology that can prevent famines. But a few bad actors abusing it made them unacceptable to most people.

I don’t think the media is the problem. The tech is great. But the use cases being sold to us by tech bros of using ‘AI’ to reduce the workforce, solve the loneliness epidemic, generate « art »… are very unpopular ideas to everyone except shareholders. Especially when you add the energy cost.

It’s also notable that lots of the people calling attention to this are… Americans, who are clearly quite aware of the clips origins! I would imagine there is some overlap between this group and the New Yorker’s audience
