The so-called head of 🇬🇪 government was still trying to make himself look important among the European leaders just 2 days ago.

Today, his regime is waging war against its own people with tear gas and violence. What a disgrace.

Europe, stand with the Georgians.

The UN Special Rapporteur on environmental defenders has submitted an amicus brief in Anar Mammadli’s case 🌍

Azerbaijan has a duty under the Aarhus Convention: defenders must not face reprisals ⚖️

Calls for Anar’s release and for charges to be dropped 🕊️

Graphic with a teal background showing a quote from Michel Forst, UN Special Rapporteur on environmental defenders under the Aarhus Convention. Text reads: “Environmental defenders must not be penalised, persecuted or harassed for their work under the Aarhus Convention. I therefore urge to ensure: • The prompt release of Mr. Anar Mammadli from pre-trial detention; • The withdrawal of all criminal charges against Mr. Anar Mammadli.” Below is Michel Forst’s name, title, reference to his letter on 19 September 2025, and a small photo of him in front of the UN flag. I shared three reflections:
1️⃣ Civil society must go back to basics
2️⃣ Small victories must be recognised and rewarded
3️⃣ Mental health must be at the centre

Every small step counts. Each act of dignity is a seed of renewal ✨

Yet as Svetlana Alexievich reminds us, there is consolation through the apocalypse: small acts of courage, modest steps forward, fragments of dignity that still matter 🌱

Honoured to have had the chance to speak at the 8th Leonidas Donskis Conference in Vilnius on Human Rights: from Hope to Despair.

For the first time since the Holocaust, humanity will end this decade worse off than it began 📉

A thread below 🧵⤵️
A smartphone on a stand shows the website “dissident-tour.com” with the text “Are you ready to unveil the secrets of Vilnius underground?” A speaker, Florian Irminger, in a grey suit with a white shirt, holding a tablet, sits on stage with a microphone headset. A presentation screen is behind him. A panel discussion at the 8th Leonidas Donskis Memorial Conference. Five panelists are seated on stage in front of a screen showing “Panel II” with the names of the moderator Janet Gunn and panelists Anna Chernova, Florian Irminger, Jonathan Boyd, and Brigita Dyburytė. Audience members are seated in rows facing the panel. A desk with posters reading “NO!” and “ALIVE? ALIVE.” in front of a large wall image showing three soldiers, one holding a European Union flag. All of it in Ukrainian colours.

Abuse of psychiatry: a dramatic faultline⚡️⤵️

Dec 2011: Mr Spivak was arrested and sent for psychiatric examination
Dec 2012-Oct 2014: confined in Dnipro Psy. Hospital, forcibly medicated, held in degrading conditions
Psychiatric abuse in action in Belarus

The Hanchar family of the town of Krasnapolle, Mahiliou region, has called upon Belarusian human rights activists and independent journalists to help protect their under-age daughter from psychiatry abuse. The Hanchars claim that their daughter Liudmila is about to be hospitalized by order of local police. According to Liudmila’s elder sister Volha, two policemen accompanied by a psychiatrist paid a visit to the family’s apartment to hospitalize the girl, claiming that she needed immediate medical intervention due to ‘severe mental disorder’, cause by a school incident a year ago, when the girl was badly beaten by her classmates. After Liudmila’s mother said the girl was out and demanded that the officials left the flat, the policemen pinioned the woman’s arms and the doctor made an injection of unknown medicine.

Worrying: Roy Allison underlines how Putin’s Russia is reinterpreting what the state border means, now turning towards the “state’s strategic borders”. In other words, it isn’t hiding anymore that it sees a right for itself to change its borders to respond to strategic interests.

Russia regressed to a Stalinist regime of total repression. We need to know that we are not dealing with the Soviet Union of the 1980s when it through political imprisonment basically ended the Russian human rights movement — the situation is now worse, details Robert van Voren.

Every day heroes are buried with no end of war in sight—Robert van Voren speaking at opening of Conference.

50 years after the signing of the Helsinki Act, this is the reality we live in. No family gathering, no meeting with friends ever take place without a talk about war.

Leonidas Donskis would call on us to remain vigilant: human rights aren’t a matter of declarations. They only matter when you defend them in practice.

To remember is not only to honour but to continue and finish his conversations, says incoming rector Vytautas Magnus University.
