The Brits (And more recently, a lot of continental Europeans) have made this an article of faith. It's the laziest form of anti-Americanism.

The one that always amazes me is when people insist no Irish person uses the word soccer.
January 28, 2026 at 7:34 PM
What, they said it wasn't an Americanism? I don't think that's a matter of opinion.
January 28, 2026 at 7:05 PM
Ok, I think this is new. I have no doubt pry-vacy is an Americanism, but it's much longer established in Ireland.
January 28, 2026 at 6:33 PM
I try to stick to the latter one there when possible, although that can be tricky living abroad.
January 28, 2026 at 6:23 PM
I always associated that pronunciation with Britain as the "American" one seemed more common in Ireland.

A poor showing.

The excuse is the same as the one Spanish people use- "my family didn't go to the colonies, they stayed right here." Obviously this is absurd when you consider how many people went back and forth between the colonizing nations and their colonies, but the people who say this are being obtuse.

His suggested version would change your intended meaning, so he's just wrong.

Yeah, all of those people are either dishonest or have been huffing glue.

Which should surprise nobody. You might as well point out that most ICE agents voted for Trump.

A lot of people around the world have trouble understanding that a country can be a parliamentary republic, even though this is normal in Europe.
January 11, 2026 at 8:27 PM
They enjoy doing this, like with their "countries".
January 11, 2026 at 8:25 PM
There are lots of countries where it hasn't caught on at all. Spanish language posts here seem to all be from Spain for instance, with very few Latin Americans on the site.

In The Wind that Shakes the Barley, you can see a clearly recently planted conifer plantation, something totally anachronistic to 1920s Ireland.

What are some egregious examples of this? All I can think of right now is Lord of the Rings.

Ecuadorian or Salvadoran?

This is what the US military does in other countries.
January 7, 2026 at 6:33 PM
The US army is already full of mercenaries, they'll be happy to find another employer.
