Released this morning, the Bureau of Labor Statistics' labor share of income for Q3 2025 is the lowest on record. That value is an index. As a percent it is 53.8% in Q3, down from 56.5% in 2019 and 63.1% in 2000.

Labour Government in Australia The parliamentary elections took place in Australia recently. The Labour Party, which had the majority in the Lower House, having forty-four seats out of seventy-five, suffered defeat. Now it only has thirty-six seats out of seventy-five. The majority has passed to the Liberals, but this majority is very unstable, because in the Upper House, thirty out of the thirty-six seats are occupied by Labour. What a peculiar capitalist country is this in which Labour 1 predominates in the Upper House and recently predominated in the Lower House and yet the capitalist system does not suffer any danger! An English correspondent of a German Labour newspaper recently explained this circumstance, which is very often misrepresented by bourgeois writers. The Australian Labour Party does not even claim to be a Socialist Party. As a matter of fact it is a liberal-bourgeois party, and the so-called Liberals in Australia are really Conservatives.

A new first for me. Cycling with an N95 mask. I agreed to ride with a mate - only to find when I opened the door that my suburb was filled with smoke. So I grabbed a mask. I pulled the pin after 20 mins. Throat is slightly sore.

Initially, aerial shooting demonstrates the highest population reduction of all methods reviewed here with more than two studies and produces a substantially higher average capture per unit of effort (34.04 pigs hour-1), more than 456 times the capture rate efficiency than ground shooting (hunting). However, as control programs progress and densities decline from pre-control levels, the effort required to remove further pigs increases exponentially (Choquenot et al., 1999). As such, other control tools may demonstrate greater efficiencies during these and other program-specific circumstances, and therefore should be considered. Trapping produced the second highest population reduction with an average of 63.1%, but at a considerably higher effort (0.01 pigs hour-1) than aerial shooting (34.04 pigs hour-1). However, actual labour effort (intermittent for trapping vs continuous for aerial shooting) and other data (i.e. number of traps, distances travelled, labour used) to support a direct comparison are lacking. Despite this, trapping may have greater success than aerial shooting after the initial cull period and could capture pigs surviving aerial shooting programs, or those who have developed avoidance response. Aerial baiting and ground baiting are also recommended control tools, with ground baiting with grain baits resulting in higher average population reductions than aerial baiting with either substrate (49.7% and 39.4% respectively)

Ground-based shooting is commonly used to try and reduce the impacts or abundance of over-abundant animal populations in many parts of the world. It encompasses a wide range of activities carried out by many different types of people driven by a variety of interacting motivations. Given this contextual complexity, it is unsurprising that results of ground shooting operations for pest animal control range from counter-productive to highly effective. This review systematically examines a sample of published papers that report on the efficacy of ground-based shooting operations in Australasia, North America, Europe and Japan. Although the sample was small and the literature surveyed included many flaws and inconsistencies, several key themes that contribute to effectiveness were identified. These included: 1) the use of tools or methods that enhance efficiency; 2) a manageable geographic area of operations; and 3) the use of highly skilled and committed shooters. Factors repeatedly shown to detract from efficacy included: 1) the inability of harvest-oriented shooters to sustain effort as target populations declined; 2) insufficient spatial or temporal coverage to counter immigration; and 3) the presence of refugia within treatment areas. It is clear that ground shooting can make important contributions to the management of pest or over-abundant species, but shooting alone is often insufficient or prohibitively inefficient to achieve desired outcomes. Managers planning to use ground shooting as part of a population management strategy should: 1) carefully examine the options to determine what type of shooting operation is likely to be most useful; 2) establish and monitor meaningful objectives; 3) ensure that operations are sufficiently resourced to meet and maintain those objectives; and 4) integrate ground shooting with other control methods wherever possible. Operations that are poorly-planned, resourced, integrated and executed are unlikely to deliver useful outcome… Ground-based shooting has been used in activities aiming to reduce pest animal densities and impacts in Australia since the earliest years of European settlement. The use of ground shooting is likely to increase in coming years as technological advances and a growing population of recreational hunters broaden the scope of situations in which it can be used. However, there are major limitations on the ability of ground shooting operations to contribute to pest management objectives, and poor application of ground shooting methods can potentially cause more harm than good. Shooting programs and operations examined in this review tended to fall along a continuum between: Ground shooting can often appear to offer a simple solution to pest management problems, but the studies reviewed here show that that is rarely the case. In some cases, a quick response to an emerging problem is required. However, proper investment of time and effort before commencing operations will often reduce the risk of management programs developing into ineffectual, expensive and cumbersome sustainable harvesting programs.

Brunner’s earlier work, Stand on Zanzibar was a classic of the genres. Hugo and Nebula award winner Joe Haldeman accurately described Brunner thus (in his review of Stand on Zanzibar):
