Been playing Nier: Automata.
Emil, a character from the Nier series of games, runs past the camera with a cowboy hat, socks on his arms, and bright red shorts. It is a reference to a picture of the character Philippe from the comic Achewood, based on Philippe and Emil both being very special boys.

Today was terrible comics day and I had mild sleep deprivation and heat exhaustion so what could I do except a nigh-incomprehensible riff on Dune.
A picture of "the artist" sweating and tugging at his collar, with an arrow and the words "THE ARTIST: two day jag of bad sleep; 30 degrees celsius outside; dehydrated; idiot; brain misfiring." The rest of the comic takes place in his thought balloon, where- in full colour- he is walking through the sand dunes of the distant world of Arrakis. He says the following: "Wwhatup, Youtube?! It's ya boy, Flyknife Comics, here with another classic prank! We took the eighteen youtubers with the highest follower counts and brought them here to Arrakis, just outside the former Harkonnen capitol of Carthag! If they can get to Arrakeen without getting caught by the most bloodthirsty Sardaukar that Salusa Secundus had to offer, they get a CHOAM directorship and their water-weight in spice! Let's check in!" The first image is the artist, whose eyes are bugging out in shock at the sight of three Sardaukar terror troops standing around a burning heap of bodies, presumably the aforementioned Youtubers. The artist grabs the sides of his head and, panicking, yells "OHHHHHH SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIT." Suddenly, over a nearby dune, several officers of the New York Police Department, waving an American flag and trailed by helicopters, point at the panicking artist. "Look, it's the kidnapper!" they say. "Take him down!" The artist turns and lifts a knife in a warrior salute as he activates his personal shield with his free hand. "BRING IT ON!" he yells, his eyes now the blue-within-blue Eyes of Ibad common to the Fremen in the Dune series of novels. "May thy PIG KNIVES chip and shatter!" The tail of the thought bubble leads back to the head of the cartoonist in reality, who still looks confused and tired. The words "Long Live The Cartoonists"- a reference to Dune's "Long Live The Fighters"- are written above the artist's signature.

Making sure I've locked in all the major character designs for Starbreakers 3; I usually start with the Zap Jockeys but they're pretty solidified by now so I decided to work from the newer characters first. What is Sivan's deal? Read Starbreakers 3 to find out!
A woman in a forest-green tunic with red accents and large pauldrons grins at the viewer. In one hand she's holding a reddish-pink handgun with a foregrip and a long barrel. She has reddish brown hair and several cat-adjacent features, like a bushy tail and paw-like feet. Next to her is text that reads as follows: Duchess Sivan Pardalis: the last surviving member of the Pardalis bloodline, one of the founding houses of the Second Carthagen Empire. She has long ago forsaken any claim to throne or fief, and instead travels the stars with her retinue of Claw Marines, seeking the destruction of the alien powers that helped to subvert and destroy her home. Her millennia-long vendetta with the fascist dictator Lady-Corvus Kubaryi Liyon has brought her into contact with the Zap Jockeys. Accomplished with both blade and carbine, she is a formidable ally- and a fearsome foe. Valiant Facts: - Ever since the fall of Carthagennon, she has kept a housecat or similar animal as a pet. In her life, she has had 43, 625 cats! - Once, she ate an entire watermelon- rind and all- just to prove a point! - Her personal record for one-armed push-ups is 1900! - She always hated the refined and luxurious food served at royal functions. Her favourite meal is deep-fried meat (any) with extra gravy and cherry soda! Beneath that is the logo for the Valiant Stars comic series.

I don't usually do posts here unrelated to my comics but I just want to say to whosoever vandalized this sign about a proposed development on a local green space: 🫡

Took a break from drawing my own blorbos today to draw @grahamite.bsky.social's blorbo, the Disco Bitch (careful following through to that profile, they got the spicy art). I love and respect both this character and Guitar Wolf and their hit 1999 film Wild Zero from which the quote originates.

Took a little break from pencils to knock out another mini-based character- Coyote Smart. She scorns showers almost totally. Her girlfriend puts up with it for love. I knew a guy once who thought daily baths would destroy vital oils necessary for skin health, he wasn't as cool or gay as Coyote.

Realized I didn't update here with the latest pirate character, Zorro Whitewine- his whole planet was destroyed and the psychic scream generated by that act of violence turned his body to star stuff and ensured that until vengeance is carried out, he cannot die (or sleep). Life is hard for him.

Weather's been too cruddy and cold for me to countenance the ~20 minute walk to the print shop to run off my roughs and start pencilling Starbreakers 3 so have another little pirate fella. Parrish isn't part of Kitty's crew, he's kinda got his own thing happening. All his clothes hate him.

Also these are the two latest members of Kitty Kissbang's crew: Bellara Quentin, a livestreamer in the surplus military hardware community, and Marcosa Qrill, a good listener and dessert connoisseur. The roster grows, at some point I will have to get these guys into a book. (It'll happen just chill)

Also realised I never posted the last guy between Tapioca and Bestopher, Oni Rasalhague. Nobody knows what Oni is, or the specifics of the Angel Rig that they now bear, or what the deal is with the giant sword of light in their arm, but they know the only thing they need to: that Oni is a friend.

The latest pirate in Kitty Kissbang's crew to be drawn: Bestopher Spall, an enigma with a checkered, lovelorn past and poor social skills (generally well-adjusted people do not become space pirates). Also he has a little guy in his gun who makes bullets on demand, as you do.
An androgynous space pirate with a long, canine snout stands in a leisurely pose. They are wearing a loose-fitting blue shirt, puffy blue pants, and knee-high white leather boots with gold soles and kneepads. Their hair is spiked nearly vertically and their fur sticks out in spikes around their cheeks. They're wearing a short cape and gloves, and under one arm they are carrying a lever-action rifle with a large muzzle device fixed to the barrel. Text next to them reads "BESTOPHER SPALL: The hard-hearted Highlander who Hunts the Heat with a High-Caliber Hotshot!" A caption box reads "The Planet Zegyma, Battle of Kubler Ridge." Bestopher Spall runs in a serpentine fashion towards cover as bolts of energy shoot in from offscreen towards them. Once under cover, they pump the lever on their gun once to eject the spent shell casing. "Hotshot!" they yell at their gun. "Wake up!" A tiny hatch in the stock slides open, revealing a small, smiling creature with big eyes and tiny arms with no hands. "Yes, boss?" Hotshot asks, saluting smartly. "Grenade, 40mm, airburst!" Bestopher barks. Hotshot salutes again. "You got it, boss!" The last image is of Bestopher firing their gun and the grenade arcing overhead and exploding above the sandbagged position from which Bestopher was being shot at.

A huge, doglike creature, walking on stilts, draped with ragged cloth and with huge, glowing eyes creeps around the corner of the stall. "A dream thief?!" It asks, grinning with a mouth full of jagged teeth. It leaps towards the terrified merchant, tongue lolling madly out of its mouth. "Oh, we're gonna TORTURE your ass!" The dog-thing lifts the bread merchant with one of their stilts. "Yer goin' before the statue of Moloch to be symbolically castrated!" it crows with delight. We can see now it is wearing a sign on which the words "Public Safety Officer" are printed. "Noooooo!" the bread-seller yells. "Not again!" Alaric and Barisov watch as the bread-seller is dragged off, tormented by the Public Safety Officer, who declares "Also we're gonna put a little diaper on ya and hold a gun to your head till you say 'goo-goo ga-ga.'" "Noooooo but that's so embarrassing!" shrieks the bread-seller. "Can't do the time, don't do the crime!" answers the Public Safety Officer. Barisov looks to Alaric with mild suspicion. "How did you know?" he asks, as Alaric looks to the ground. "Smelled the dreams," Alaric answers, bending down to pick something up. "Hoh," Barisov mutters, neither asking for nor expecting clarification. The thing Alaric picked up is one of the bread seller's loaves. On the last page, Alaric holds the loaf close to his face. "Can we stop somewhere for lunch, though?" Barisov asks from offscreen. Alaric sniffs deeply of the bread and puffs out another cloud of smoke, his expression becoming for the first time wistful and sad rather than perpetually angry. Then, in the last panel, he is once again his normal, scowling self. "No," he says. A small box in the corner declares this the END.

"Spelt," the bread-seller declares. "Spelt," Alaric repeats, blowing plumes of smoke out of his nostrils. "What else?" The bread seller seems at a loss for a second, then adds "Salt." "And?" presses Alaric. The bread-seller's answers come through an increasingly strained smile. "Water?" "And?" "B-baking soda." While Alaric grills the bread-seller, becoming more and more animated and angry as the evasions mount, Barisov (in the background) grabs an issue of a magazine called 'Puppymuck' from the stall behind them, which folds out into a large centrefold. "And?" "Sugar?" "AND?" "Uh- egg?" "AND?" "Uh- um- p-p-poppyseed?" "AND?! AND?!" "Uh- um- um-" "W-w-w-" the bread-seller begins to answer, but then covers his mouth, his shocked expression suggesting that he has come close to saying too much. Alaric pounces, blowing smoke into the bread-seller's face. "Wh-wh-wh-WHUH?!" he taunts the bread merchant. "Wh-wh-wh-WHAT?!" "W-w-w-wishes..." the bread seller answers, sweating. "Wishes," Alaric says, glaring at the merchant. "And?" The bread-seller finally cracks. "DREEE-EE-EEAAAAMS!" he cries, finally losing composure. A close up on Alaric's eye betrays a small satisfaction. "Wishes and dreams," he says. "Thought so." Alaric turns to the crowd in the marketplace. "Hey! Everybody! We got a dream thief over here!" We can also see in the foreground that Barisov has purchased multiple magazines from the stall.

Finally finished this goofy thing- a gag idea I thought of in the shower one morning and used as an excuse to take these characters for a walk. Was supposed to take a couple of weeks, ended up taking almost a month. BREAD (1/3)
Comic page. A chameleon-headed man and a sickly-looking samurai walk through a crowded open air market. Captions inform us that this is "The Planet Adacta; Mercy Street Market", also that the chameleon-headed man is "Alaric Goldtongue, first mate aboard the pirate cruider 'Tigereye'" and the samurai is "Barisov the Butcher, Alaric's muscle." Barisov's attention is drawn by a shout from out of panel: "Bread! Git'chor Bread!" The call comes up from a short, round creature with long, tubelike arms, white gloves, and an expression of mania. "BREEEAAD!", they cry. "Favourite food of humans! Crusty! Flaky! Enjoyed by enthusiasts! Get it! Buy it! BREAAAD!" Barisov smiles thoughtfully and muses aloud: "Hoh... I could go for a hot, fresh scone... maybe some foccacia with oil an' vinegar... a little naan... wonder if they got any gluten-free..." Suddenly, Alaric interrupts him by holding his arm out to stop Barisov walking any closer. "Pump the brakes, string bean," says Alaric. "I got an inkling about this one." Of minor note, behind them are two stalls, one with a sign reading "GUNZ N' PORN LLC", and a second reading "NO GUNZ, JUST PORN LLC". The bread-hawking creature continues to cry out: "HA-OOOGAH! IT'S GOT DA YEAST! IT'S BREAD! IT'S BREAD! IT'S-" They pause and look up hopefully as a shadow- Alaric's- falls over them. "Bread?" "Seasons greetings, young man! Interest you in an authentic loaf?" The bread seller addresses Alaric. "Maybe," Alaric answers. "What kind of bread you got?" We can see that the seller's stall is piled high with bread, but they seem confused by the question. "K-kind?" They ask. "Yeah, kind. What kind of bread?" repeats Alaric. The last panel is a silent shot of the bread seller staring nonplussed into the middle distance. The first two panels of this page are copies of the last, continuing the bread seller's stare into nothing. Finally he looks down, then back up at Alaric, declaring "Normal kind." "'Normal kind?'" sneers Alaric. "You got 'normal kind' bread?" "Sure," answers the bread seller. "Uh-huh. What's in 'normal kind' bread?" Alaric seems unsatisfied with this answer.

Took a break from roughing Starbreakers 3 pages to draw more characters based on my miniatures- up next is Tapioca Fisk, Kitty Kissbang's ship's purser. She inherited a gigantic magical book in which she must record every financial transaction across the universe and it's made her a bit stressed.

For some reason getting this character drawn took forever but I finally got to a result I can live with. Weird given how clearly I could picture him in my head but he definitely took a few iterations to get the energy right. ANYWAY.

A twofer today, Moon and Sun. I still intend to finish Swordtember but will obviously not be getting it all done IN September. But I like the conceit and it's a good excuse to do character designs and self-contained little things like this, so I'm gonna keep doing it!

The reason Swordtember has been falling behind is because I've been doing a lot of work on roughing pages for Starbreakers 3. Got ~40 pages of script left to outline and then I'm on to pencils. But that's why Swordtember isn't regular. I will finish it tho, I want to. Maybe not in September.

Took a break from swordtember to work on this design, which is not complicated but was tough because the character vibe needs to be "gym rat with the brain of a hyperactive VTuber" and that was tough to capture for some reason.
