Humans: Ah, the human brain, a masterpiece of evolution, truly we are so creative and problemsolving and artistic and smart we are the BEST.

Also humans: NOW, how do I make sure I literally never, ever have to think.

Open science is more than just datasets. It's also opening access to scientific facilities and pipelines.

OpenScope allows researchers from around the world to pitch experiments to be run – at not cost to them – in the Allen Brain Observatory.

1. The HHS Appropriations Bill is out and it contains several devastating anti-trans provision.

It would bar federal funding for trans youth and adult care nationwide, which could be used to bar hospitals from providing it at all.

Will Democrats stand firm, or cave to avoid a shutdown?

Potential grad students: we have funds for RAs (you would not necessarily need to TA unless that helps you with your career goals). All grad applicants would need to apply through the Graduate School at Howard University. Please get in touch with me before you send in your application!

We are a developmental and cell biology lab at Howard University in Washington DC that studies biological pattern formation, cell-cell communication, and cell morphogenesis using the fruit fly as a model system.

Please have folks get in touch me (DM or see our lab website in my profile).

IMPORTANTLY: This research would not be possible without federal funds. Our collab started when we volunteered to co-mentor undergrads in a Math-Biology REU (NSF). Dr Asante-Asamani and I both are PIs on NIH awards. Federal support of fundamental STEM research is critical!
flysci.bsky.social
This is has been a fun collaboration including the times when we were doing a lot of hard work and deep thinking to explore new avenues that turned out just to be a fancy and complicated way of measuring density :)
flysci.bsky.social
We teamed up with Dr Asante-Asamani's group in Math to tackle this issue and try to develop ways to analyze and classify wild type and disrupted patterns using machine learning. We identified 4 clustering features that were useful in classifying patterns from wild type and RNAi-expressing tissues.

It’s not so bad to describe when there are no bristles at all, or if there are too many bristles. But is that it? Besides even a ‘wild type pattern’ is a range of different organizations, not a fixed target.
flysci.bsky.social
My group studies the sensory bristle array on the thorax of the fly and one challenge of our work is quantifying the pattern. Lots of mutations affect the pattern. But how exactly do they affect it?
